Last week, FOX debuted a new game show for the holiday week called Million Dollar Money Drop. Is it a good investment for the network? Will it stick around or be cancelled?
On Million Dollar Money Drop, host Kevin Pollak starts out the game by handing over $1 million to a pair of contestants. To keep it all, they must answer seven multiple choice questions correctly. The couple can distribute their cash on more than one answer but must use it all. They lose whatever cash they put on incorrect answers and must watch as it drops out of sight through trap doors. The contestants get to keep however much cash, if any, they have after answering all seven questions.
The game show debuted last Monday to a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.31 million total viewers. It ranked in third place for the 8pm timeslot. The second episode aired at 9pm to a 2.0 rating and 5.33 million, still in third place. On Tuesday at 8pm, the third installment registered a 2.2 rating and 7.04 million. At 9pm, opposite all repeats, it dropped down to a 2.0 rating and 5.57 million viewers. On Wednesday, Money Drop fell to a 1.6 rating in the demo and 4.79 million total viewers. Thursday’s installment, per fast affiliate ratings, fell again to a 1.3 rating and 4.54 million viewers.
So far, the show has averaged a 1.8 rating and 5.43 million viewers. That’s not great but its not too bad either. The competition wasn’t as tough last week but there were also a lot fewer people watching network television. On the positive side, Money Drop’s season average is almost as good as Fringe and Lie to Me and is much less expensive to produce than they are.
It’s unclear how many unaired episodes are left but has several more scheduled throughout the month of January. If the ratings for these installments are solid, it’s a safe bet that FOX will order more. At the very least, it could be a solid utility player and fill timeslots as needed.
A sidenote: If you’ve been following the news, you know that an answer from one of last Monday’s shows has been disputed. As a result, contestants Gabe Okoye and Brittany Mayti have been invited to play the game again on a future episode. Presumably, for them to do that, the show will have to go back into production. The pair have yet to agree to return to the game.
What do you think? Is Million Dollar Money Drop worth watching? Would you keep it or cancel it?

The show is the new Price is Right of night time TV. Keep it on.
Heck Ya !!! Keep it on. It’s great home interaction n we both love it!
Is FOX nuts?! Absolutely keep it on. I check my TV menu every week just to see when it’s coming on…only other competition evenings for ratings is American Idol/ that’s also a FOX program…nothing else worth watching on any other network. Enjoy the show!
Keep the show on I like it
I love this show, keep it!
I think it’s a great show and I think people will enjoy playing along and guessing the answers to the questions.
It’s a great show & I think people of all ages will enjoy playing along and guessing the answers to the questions.
I enjoyed it. Anytime you can play along and interact it’s fun.
Keep it on ! It is one great game show !!! I enjoy every minute of it !
Don’t believe the hype. So far, 12 contestant pairs, but only $360,000 given out; 2/3 of the total — to only one couple. It’s even worse on the British version- no one’s won more than 75,000 out of the million! — Source Wikipedia.
When the producers ask the host to tarnish his reputation by spreading misinformation, that is really bad. FCC complaints should be filed, the show is probably illegal. Fox has a long history of airing fraudulent game shows; but it is a very stiff penalty, possibly jail time, if they are found guilty.
I love the Million dollar money drop tv game. It is so intense and beats all game shows that are on tv right now.
I love the game and wish I could be on it. Me and my friend rush home to watch it and play along. Please bring the game to Florida, West Palm Beach. I would love to play. My nerves will be sky high. Maybe a tequila before the game would not be a bad idea!!! Just kidding!! But we will love to be on the show. Please bring it to Florida.
If you’re going to have a game show make sure you have the correct answers, at least twice this show has cheated players out of the money with the correct answer dropping.
Agreed. You would think they would have enough sense to thoroughly research their questions. I feel like they always pick the same kind of couples too. They all have the same kind of interactions and personalities. My husband thinks the show is scripted, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that but I absolutely think they need to be more diverse in the couples they choose.
I think Million Dollar Drop is invigorating, gripping and nerve wracking and should be picked up by some network for continued viewing.
Keep the show on. I enjoy watching it and would like to be a contestant.
