Back in May 2008, after Moonlight had been cancelled by CBS, there was some talk of the vampire series moving over to the CW network. The Media Rights Capital (MRC) company had purchased CW’s Sunday night timeslots, to fill with their own content.
Unfortunately, MRC was committed to using their own shows (a move that certainly didn’t work out very well) and Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles, and Jason Dohring had to start looking for other work. Considering that there are still thousands and thousands of loyal Moonlight fans, you have to think that somebody is regretting the decision.
Well, it took almost two years but Moonlight is finally coming to the CW network. Unfortunately, no new episodes are being produced. The CW will pair the 16 existing episodes with reruns of The Vampire Diaries beginning Thursday, June 3rd.
Here’s the official press release.
“MOONLIGHT” TO SHINE ON THE CW
Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins “The Vampire Diaries” On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.
Produced By: Silver Pictures Television in association with Warner Bros. Television
Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Chip Johannessen, Ron Koslow, Rod Holcomb and Gerard Bocaccio
Co-Executive Producer: Trevor Munson
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that CW or any other network has any plans or interest in resurrecting Moonlight. O’Loughlin is expected to be busy with the new Hawaii Five-0 this fall on CBS (which co-owns the CW network).
What do you think? Will you be tuning in to watch the Moonlight reruns?
hell ya ill be watching
love, love, love this show…i was really disappointed when they canceled this show…i was looking forward every friday night…i was waiting for the 2nd season then nothing…
:(…hope they bring back this show…mick and beth belong together…:D
I have already seen all the episodes of Moonlight and I try to remember to watch on the CW. I finally decided to go online and see if they were really bringing it back or just using it as filler. I guess it is the latter. I would enjoy them bringing it back. It worked for Family Guy and Futurama.
I meant to write “every time a Law and Order comes on I want to tear my hair out”. Okay, I’ll quit commenting now.
When I wrote that Hawaii 50 can’t be redone I meant because it was a great show. Just wanted to clarify that besides we have way too many cop shows on the air. Even time a Law and Order comes on I want to tear my hair out. It’s been a good show, but enough already.
Love Moonlight!!!!! I still have a theory that the special effects were pricey and TV today is driven by cheap, cheap, cheap, hence all the reality shows. I remember when network TV was actually good. I agree that Moonlight is Alex’s best show, besides I am older and remember the original Hawaii 50 and there’s no way that show can be redone. Forget about it! Bring back Moonlight. It’s worth the cost to have something interesting and entertaining on for a change.
I think bringing this show back would be a great idea, esp. with vampires being so popular now and everything. It has a completely different storyline than other vampire shows, I love it and was soooooo mad when I discovered there wasn’t a second season. They should bring it back!
CBS showed their bad faith when they cancelled Moonlight, with malice. There was some bad blood (no pun intended) going on for them to cancel a great show about vampires (hello, they are very very popular these days) and not even show reruns. I don’t care what show Alex O’L is on, he is and always will be Mick St. John. He never seems as comfortable and real in any of the many other roles CBS has put him in. CBS just proved they are morons and idiots by now cancelling Ghost Whisperer, also with malice. No reruns? What five… Read more »
I love the Moonlight reruns and I watch then every week. CW totally needs to bring this series back!
I will be watching the reruns. I hope they do bring back this show. With all the hype with vampires….this is the best one vampire show. They need to start where they left off.
Ok so then what… They take Moonlight to the CW, they attract new fans, get them all excited, and then screw them too?! I’m still bitter about this show, Joan of Arcadia and now Cold Case. These shows win awards and then they cancel them. At least with cable there’s closure. No more CBS for me. They make me tired. I get invested in these shows and they cancel them.
Well now you can add Criminal Minds to the CBS list. They cut AJ Cook’s role of JJ and cut down Paget Brewsters appearances. The cast and the fans are in a war with CBS right now. There are over 900 comments at the criminal minds blogspot. The cast is tweeting and I think everyone is about to boycott CBS… I’m a huge Moonlight fan who went through this before and now CM??? and they want us to watch more of their shows?
really loved this show… watched all the episodes like in one day… wish i would of known of the shows existence earlier so i could of fought for it..!! BRING BACK MOONLIGHT!!!! please. with everyone now hooked with all these vampire shows like twilight saga, tru blood and the vampire diaries i really think that MOONLIGHT would be a big hit for sure!! I can only hope that my small impact of watching reruns as support to the show will do some good in reviving the show with of course the original cast! please hear us out… this show would… Read more »
Loved the series. Own the series on DVD. Still heartbroken over its demise by the BLACK EYE. Did not watch 3 Rivers nor will watch Hawaii 50. Will not support the Black Eye since the loss of MOONLIGHT. I am a MOONLIGHT fan! Should any other network revive the series, along with the original cast, I will follow. As bittersweet as it is, I will watch the reruns of the series on CW, to show my support of the series. The Black Eye didn’t even do that for fans following its demise. We never even had the summer reruns! And… Read more »
Louise,
Hats off to you for speaking your heart. I couldn’t agree more. What a mistake it was to cancel and I am more than sure they are kicking themselves. Let’s hope all the hard work and determination of the fans will get WB moving on reviving Moonlight.
Thanks Ann,
So many fans feel the same. It has all been said and to the right people. However, no one seems to care enough to pick it up. And we would need the original cast to make it worth the revival. Love Alex, but I am a MOONLIGHT fan we need the chemistry of the original cast, as that is what made it work so well. I do believe in miracles and I fear it will take one to revive MOONLIGHT.
I really enjoy this show and only wish I would have watched it when it originally aired! I have never seen a network bring back a show a couple years after it has been cancelled, but hopefully this time they will reconsider!! This would be a grreat series and now woul be the perfect time to bring it back. With the vampire craze and all. And of course the original cast is always better, at least Alex! Who wants to see Hawaii five-o anyway? I think it would be a mistake, but what do I know, I am not a… Read more »
