The second season of Murder in the First is winding down on TNT. This detective show’s season ratings weren’t all that great inits first year but how is it doing this time around? Have the numbers gone up or down? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
In season two of Murder in the First, San Francisco homicide detectives Terry English (Taye Diggs) and Hildy Mulligan (Kathleen Robertson) investigate a series of murders with ramifications that could tear their department and city apart. Others in the cast include A.J. Buckley, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Laila Robins, Mo McRae, Mateus Ward, John Cothran, Raphael Sbarge, Lombardo Boyar, Ian Anthony Dale, Currie Graham, and Mimi Kirkland.
Debuting in June of 2014, the first season ended up averaging a 0.45 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.84 million viewers. These numbers weren’t bad but they weren’t stellar either. The cable channel could have gone either way with the series’ fate but they ended up renewing it for year two. It was renewed a month after the season finale aired — seemingly an indication that they were on the fence.
Season two of Murder in the First launched this past June. Compared to the series launch a year earlier, the season premiere was down by a whopping 47% in the demo and by 37% in viewership. Certainly not a good sign.
To date, the season’s been averaging a 0.32 demo rating (down 30%) and 2.1 million viewers (down 26%).
While all of TNT’s shows are way down in the ratings, Murder in the First’s ratings weren’t so good last year so a major drop looks extra bad.
The cable channel could decide to keep this series around for another season but I suspect, with these kind of numbers, they’ll opt to cancel it and put their resources elsewhere.
But, what do you think? Should this series be cancelled or renewed? If you ran TNT, would you order a third season?
Renew. As previously mentioned, excellent show with great characters and interesting plots compared to so many shows that keep coming back to my amazement. But, why should I be surprised with the drama and reality show society we live in nowadays.
They have invented good characters and I feel that if they can boost up the story like they achieved in season one, they should have one more chance to show us what they have. Season two was a disappointment, but I think the writers for this show can do better!!!
please do not cancel this show. it is an excellent show with great actors & good story line. please leave on!!!!
XXL this show and all I have are British mysteries.
Please renew! Shows that take a little bit of intellect to follow all get cancelled. Keep something on TV for those who actually like to think! I love the characters on this one, but I thought the story in season one was better. The idea of following one case for an entire season sets this apart from all the other “crime” dramas.
Please, please keep this show on! It is my Monday night go to! Great stories and acting!
Cancel. The entire season revolves around a single crime where everyone knows who is guilty from episode 1. The rest is watching these bone-headed cops bungle the investigation, miss out on clues that are right in front of their face, and chase down pointless other crimes thrown in to fill up the time. Oh, and a little nookie here and there to try and keep you interested. This is as bad as that True Detective garbage.
Please renew it but get the story back out of the office. Really curious about the couple on the beach at end of season 2. Please renew!!
Keep it going. Renew for season 3! We love it.
Renew! I love this show – such good acting.
Really enjoy the show! The writing is superb and the acting is top notch! TNT please renew Murder in the first for Season 3!!!! 🙂
PLEASE renew this well written, well acted show!! So much better that the simplistic Major Crimes. Realistic and sophisticated !
keep it on, Monday night good fit for this show.
Cancel it. First season had interesting characters and plot. Malfoy as the bad, manipulative, good/bad guy was brilliant.
Besides the first couple of episodes, this season was fairly boring. It would’ve been more interesting to see how both kids had their own case developed than the usual bad/corrupt-cop story line.
Renew!!! Excellent acting and interesting plots . season 3 please!
