The alphabet network has decided they don’t need quite as many episodes of No Ordinary Family. This is just another indication that the show will be cancelled in May. The freshman series may revolve around a family with special powers but the ratings have been anything but super.
Starring Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz, No Ordinary Family debuted on September 28th to a 3.2 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 10.69 million viewers. That was a good start but the numbers dropped by 16% by episode two and have essentially kept falling ever since. The latest installment hit a new low with a 1.4 rating in the demo and 4.77 million viewers, making it the lowest-rated scripted show on the network.
Back in late October, despite the falling numbers, ABC ordered nine additional episodes, bringing No Ordinary Family’s season total to 22 installments. ABC execs have now decided to cut the order down to 20 episodes.
According to The Futon Critic, this week’s episode will be an original, number 17. The next two weeks will be filled by repeats and then the final three episodes of the season (and likely the series) will air after that. The finale will air on April 5th.
What do you think? Are you disappointed by the news? Is No Ordinary Family worth saving?

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease do NOT cancel this show!!!! It has brought us together as a family and with our busy schedules, that says a lot! We record this show and no one watches it until we are all together. We talk about this show with our daughter that is away at college and we look so forward to sharing the excitement of the episodes and our hopes for the future romance between Katie and Joshua. This is the first show that I have loved in a very long time. Losing it so early would be a tragedy!!!!
There are a lot of people addicted to this show, including my girlfriend and myself. ABC don’t be like Nickelodeon and cancel a great show! After Avatar: the Last Airbender I needed another series to get into, and then No Ordinary Family came along. This is such a great show and if it gets canceled it’ll be letting a lot of people down more than likely doing way more than that. There is still a lot of questions to be answered and if ABC does cancel the show, I at least hope they will end it without ANY cliff-hangers or… Read more »
I agree with the general “this show has holes, but please don’t cancel it” comments. I look forward to this one every week.
It is the Incredibles in a t.v. series. This is a cute show that my whole family likes. Why can’t wholesome shows be loved by the network. Change the day, don’t cancel the series. America in a world of dread needs some light.
I only kept my cable going for 2 shows and this was one of them. I will not be renewing my cable contract if this show gets cancelled. I will just watch what I already own on dvd. I am sick and tired of good shows (whether they are serious, funny, or just plain old campy–and I love campy shows too!) getting cancelled. There seems to be a reality show for everything. Why don’t they just get their own network (if they don’t already have one) and leave the rest of the networks to intelligent programming?
I am very disappointed to say the least that this show is being cancelled. Maybe it wasnt a perfect series but it was something the whole family could watch. I am upset and I hope it doesnt happen. Oh and before the series ends I want Jackie to get back with her boyfriend.
I really wanted to like this show as a huge fan of Chiklis since the Commish, but it is really missing some magic. It needs better sci-fi writing that you often see on cable sci-fi shows or british tv shows. I know they didnt want it to be masked heroes but come on, with all the cameras in the world, and his concern for family how could he not mask up? The writing needs to be sharper. Like last weeks where *SPOILER* he knocked a bullet into a window and hit somebody. In the end it turns out it save… Read more »
Please do not cancel this show. I have to admit, when I saw it advertise before the season started in September, I thought it looked very unpromising. BUT, I gave it a shot and it is one of my favorite shows. In fact besides a few shows on HBO, this is my favorite network show. Please give it another chance!!
This show is cheesy, but that can be overlooked for the fun of the plots. What can’t be overlooked are the casting problems, the bad acting, and the horrible writing. The family has one mexican son and a white daughter. What??? The dad plays horribly as a sensitive guy that cares about hurting innocents on the sidelines. Let Chiklis free and let the guy do some damage. He’s invincible for pete’s sake, let him act like it in one or two episodes instead of making him try to act. He’s not an actor, he’s a mad guy. Let him be… Read more »
They keep renewing the stupid reality, game shows (I guess non-scripted shows are cheaper) and cancel decent scripted shows. Yes, “No Ordinary Family is “Campy”, but it is fun. When you put it up against, NCIS, and Glee, what do you expect? I like all three, can tape two and watch the third via Hulu.
Very disappointed if they decide to cancel “No Ordinary Family”. Whole family loves the show. Big mistake ABC!
Good! It was really corney!!!!
PLEASE do NOT cancel “No Ordinary Family”. There are so few tv shows that my whole family can watch together and enjoy—without having to edit ‘sex scenes’ or some other objectionable thing that most families with kids have NO desire to see. Keep a few shows on that we can ALL watch!
Yeah, a lot of holes in this show. I understand having to suspend some belief when watching some of these shows, but really… Dad jumps all over the place leaving massive craters on peoples roofs and on the roads where he lands. Mom runs all out all but never does her clothing get effected like a flag on your car antenna. Daughter reads minds (and now can change them) and still doesn’t know what happens around her. Son has a brain and can calculate ANYTHING that he sees, yet he falls for some STUPID teacher trick? What about all his… Read more »
Just have to say, that this will be the first cancellation I will be truly disappointed in for a long time. Most shows that get cancelled, I am either good riddance, or feel like the time was right. However, No Ordinary Family is one show that I like. Yes it is a little campy. Yes it has problems. but the fact is, if you are watching TV for an hour of fun and relaxing, this is one show, that I think fits the bill. I will watch until it is cancelled. I just hope that is later and not sooner.… Read more »
