ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.

I love this show (Off the Map). It is very entertaining and I would love to stay up to watch it but I have to catch it online most of the time. I think if the show time was changed to either an earlier time or switch to thursdays at 10:00 more people would watch it. Please do not cancel the show! It has not been given a fair chance for people to watch since it comes on so late.
I love this show! I think the characters are just starting to develope thier individual personalities. I hope they have the chance to grow. the only thing that I don’t like is the time slot, I wish it had the 7:oo Central time slot

I absolutely love this show. If I miss it I always watch it online. I only like a few shows on tv these days, and this is one that I do not want to see be cancelled. Tv shows these days aren’t given half a chance. Not everyone’s opinion is taken into consideration. Just certain demographic areas. I can’t stand reality tv and unfortunately alot of people would rather watch that crazy stuff. Please keep this show afloat for another season and give it half a chance. Please keep “Off the Map” for a second season. The show is so great, reminding me of how I felt when I first started watching “Grey’s Anatomy”, not wanting each episode to end! People are just starting to hear how intriguing the show is…….please do give it a second season. It has become my very favorite drama!!
I love “Off the Map” and cannot imagine the show being canceled. I love the charasmatic characters that are brought to life weekly. I am an advid Shonda Rhimes fan and this is quickly becoming my favorite. I would prefer to see Private Practice replaced or Desperate Housewives which have gotten stale with their story lines. I love “Off the Map,” it has everything making it a really great show. It is very near the top of my favorite TV shows and I always watch it and will record and watch Private Practice later. I don’t understand how all these really entertaining shows keep getting on the “possible cancel list,” but please put it on the second season list and a full season, not just 13 episodes. Go for it, give it a chance, it really is a very, very good show.
