ABC had high hopes for Off the Map, their new medical drama from veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and ABC has now cancelled Off the Map after one season on the air.
Off the Map follows the lives of six doctors who have “lost their way” and have traveled to a remote South American jungle to try to rediscover why they wanted to become physicians.
The TV series’ cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The TV series premiered to a disappointing 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The show won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. As a result, ABC reran the premiere Off the Map the following night.
For whatever reason, subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Despite having some very passionate fans, Off the Map ended up being one of the lowest dramas on ABC. It’s no surprise then that the network has now decided against ordering a second season, cancelling the show. All 13 episodes have aired and we likely won’t find out what became of the young doctors left in the jungle.

They should have tried this in a 9:00 time slot and had a few more episodes and less commercials. There seemed to be more commercials than in most shows. I would personally DVR so I could fast forward through. The 1st half, the storylines were so going so fast to develop the characters, my guess is that viewers probably didn’t give it a fair chance.
This is one show that my husband and I both like to watch. I cannot believe that we are going to be left hanging. Why don’t they try a different timeslot.
i still ask what happened to OFF THE MAP? It was the best medical show abc ever produced.I still don understand the low rating they r givin bcoz all my workmates we were hooked in it and now just an annouced the show dissappeared bringing happy endings which is boring…WE WANT OUR SHOW BACK!!! WE WANT OUR SHOW BACK!!!! and this i mean OFF THE MAP. 🙂
I can’t understand this. Agree with some previous posts. This show was unique and would catch on given a fighting chance. But I guess we need more reality shows……this decision stinks.
WTF how could they cancel this show?! I’m a huge greys fan and I thought with time and commitment Off the Map could become just as great. And how were the ratings low? There were almost NEVER any negative comments on the show site, and each episode seemed to build a stronger and stronger fan base. I loved the actors, the characters, the writing, the scenes, EVERYTHING….bring this show back abc, and bring it back soon! One of the few shows that made me laugh, cry, and think practically every episode.
I’m super sad. I really enjoyed this show. Sadly, there are a lot of crappy shows left on air, but they don’t take chances on second seasons of things I end up liking.
“Off the Map” stands alone in its brilliance. This show has the best cast, well written storylines, and the most beautiful location in the world. It is really sad that television programming has turned to reality shows as its primary source of broadcasting. A hugh number of viewers do not like reality shows. Bring it back or at a minimum give us a finale!!! It was an awesome, unique show with great characterizations that I purposely stayed up later for, so why not try another time slot before canceling? I think it was just too expensive to produce when it is cheaper to do reality, talk shows. First you take off our daytime soaps – now our nighttime ones. Think ABC hates a serial.
Bring it back! We loved this show as it was different than what is currently on TV. The time slot was not the best so we always had to record and watch it later.

have been bad timing with audiences…or people or are too busy watching cooking shows or fat camp shows or trashy sitcoms….
Bring it back!!!! I really like this show and looked forward to watching it every week. It always keep me on my toes!!! I would really like to see more!!!
I really liked this show! It had all the right ingredients, they should give it another season! Make it less campy, and more edgy, and less preachy, just make it medical and insightful, and thought provoking. This has a lot of potential!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So irritating..especially to see the stupid shows coming. Off the map didn’t have a chance..you didn’t work with the scheduling
i live in australia, the show didnt even air here and me and my friends had to watch the show online, because we loved it so much. Clearly ABC isnt considering that there are many terrible shows on their network that should have been cancelled instead. I didnt start watching greys anatomy until season three now i never miss an episode, give off the map more of a chance to catch on. This is ridiculous that it has been cancelled. Please bring this show back ABC!
That sucks, I live this show, & it’s not fair to cancel it & leave it hanging with no finale. Could of tried a different time slot. Thus is one of my favorite shows I wouldn’t miss each week. Please bring it back!!
