The Originals wrapped up its fourth season on CW on Friday night, and fans will have a long wait for the return of the series.
Why the long wait for the return of this series?
CW did not add The Originals to its fall schedule. The network is holding back the series, which started as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, to midseason. That means at least a late 2016 start, but more than likely the series will return to CW in January.
The decision to hold the series for midseason was discussed by Mark Pedowitz at the CW Upfronts earlier this week. According to TV Line, he said:
“We have a very strong schedule. We still believe quite a bit in The Originals. We only have 10 hours, so we made a choice to [hold it] to further boost our schedule at midseason.”
As a fan of this series, this writer was confused by the announcement of the delay to midseason. In a recent interview, Julie Plec talked about future crossovers between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals for next season, but the creator wants to have those opportunities come up organically.
A delay for one of the series cuts off the opportunities for those moments. The two shows have different casts and stories, but even after three years on the air, The Originals has shown that it is still very much connected to the world of The Vampire Diaries.
SPOILER ALERT. On the finale, Klaus sacrificed himself in order for all of his siblings to live. Freya created a spell that would put her siblings to sleep after Marcel had her poisoned and bit Elijah and Kol. Klaus was daggered, and the final moments saw Marcel hiding him away behind bricks. Hayley drove off and left New Orleans with four caskets and Hope. Her mission is to find cures for the Mikaelsons.
Right now, it looks like she will be looking for that cure for nine months. That is a one very long wait. Are you surprised that CW did not put The Originals on their fall schedule? Tell us what you think.
This is my favorite show, and I like the crossovers between the vampire diairies and the originals, I think its a mistake not to air both at the same time…..
I think the people at cw are dumb to put the originals on the back burner!! It’s the best show you guys have!!! I guess everyone should just not turn on this channel till the show then they will see!!
Oh nooooooo, Is to long of a waiit! Please bring them back. The Originals are an incredible, perfect cast , awesome story line that takes you to a magical world. Truly an amazing show
Why wait till January 2017, this show is promising, do not put The Originals on the back burner, I have seen others show on The CW network that don’t look promising and they are coming back mid-season. Please bring back The Originals at mid season.
I’m going to be completely upset if the originals does not come back on! This show is so good, and I really want to know what happens!

I really don’t want to have to wait a long time for The Originals to come back on but I can wait as long as my favorite show is not being canceled.
If you want to take a show off then do it to The Vampire Diaries! The Originals is way better!

Totally dissapointed. Can’t believe they’re doing this! It shouldn’t have been The Originals! That’s a big mistake. I hope they it back.
I’ve loved the original it’s been an awesome show and not just a bunch of happy endings. I love the show now but in nine months I forget a lot, and I feel like the show will be another thing I forget. I honestly don’t care what night of the week it comes on I just want it to be sooner than nine months.
The Originals should be in the fall line up and get rid of The Vampire Diaries.

I really hate American TV schedules! You guys have to make everything so complicated! Not to mention the number of hiatus’ and breaks you have every now and then! I’m surprised it is The Originals getting this treatment and not The Vampire Diaries. To my memory, most weeks The Originals had more viewers and very good reviews while the other one didn’t at all. Everyone agrees The Vampire Diaries wasn’t very good, and the writers should have ended that show this year instead of dragging it out. The show had long since had its day. My husband and I are in our 60’s and love the Originals. A great season end, but extremely disappointed to have to wait until January to see what’s going to happen to everyone. It’s just too long!! Can’t believe that great season ending left it a little too wrapped up, as if it could end permanently. Please bring it back for sure!
Why???? The originals is hands down the best series ever, well The originals and The vampire diaries of course. This last episode had me thinking what other solution could save the Mikealsons but the smart writer of this series did it again. I love him.

What would make them think that delaying The Orginals & TVD until 2017 would make things better. That is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I love the 2 shows and they are the only thing I watch in the CW on a regular basic. I guess I will not be watching the channel at all now. VERY DISSAPPOINTED!!!
