We’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.
Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.
For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.
The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?
What do you think? Will the ratings for Parenthood go up or down? Will it be cancelled or survive to see season three?

I love Parenthood!!! If you cancel that show I will be very distraught. There is nothing of substance to watch on TV. Parenthood, The Good Wife, Harry’s Law. These are the only TV shows that people that have a brain can watch. Please you have got to put some decent shows on TV like Parenthood. The thing is that this show is not advertised enough. I doubt some people even know it is on. I love it!!!! You have got to keep it on. Another great show was Brothers and Sisters and they cancelled that as well. Yet they leave… Read more »
Don’t CANCEL this show,,best show on the air ……
Please, please do not cancel this show. My husband and I are in our sixties and both love this show. We follow it faithfully and record it if we’re going to be traveling. Parenthood has so much to offer three generations of viewers as it deals with serious family situations with a balance of , intelligence and a sence of humor. This show is considerably more valuable than so many shows that are a complete waste of time. If you need to move its time slot, please do so, but we sincerely hope you do not cancel this well-written and… Read more »

I watch very little TV but I do look forward to Parenthood. You would be doing and injustice to the devoted viewers. Please consider keeping this show on the air.
I love Parenthood, I also loved Friday Night Lights. These are shows that have alot of substance and are easy to relate to the real world. Clearly the Real World is not what people want to relate to, I am finding this more and more. I really hope they do not cancell this show. I understand that money must be made however there are a number of shows on TV right now that are painfully bad…Person of Interest and Unforgettable… totally unreailstic and the same story week after week. Please throw us logical people a bone and leave the show… Read more »
Parenthood is the best thing on TV. The “New Yorker” Magazine featured it 2 weeks ago as the best. If it it cancelled a large number of viewers like me will be extremely disappionted because its witty, funny and intelligent, unlike many others that are being renewed which are just plain boring and stupid.
We love Parenthood! It stands so far above all the standard, all- the-same-format detective shows and all the STUPID, STUPID comedy shows on the air. I can only compare it to “Friday Night Lights,” which also kept me from losing faith in TV . Let’ s hear it for this model of real-life, tough situations that make you think.

I DONT LIKE HOW THE SHOW IS PRETENTIOUS AND THE BRAVERMEN FAMILY SEEMS TOO BE SPOILED,CARRING FOR EACH OTHER SEAMS TO TAKE A BACK SEAT..MAX NEEDS TO BE TOUGH LOVED AND MOTHER NEEDS TO BE MORE FREE SPIRITED..I DONT THINK I,LL WATCH NEXT YEAR GOOD LUCK ALL….
It is evident from reading these previously printed comments that your Parenthood audience is an appreciative, intelligent demographic of people who care about real-life issues. The show deals with many of these issues in a thoughtful, dramatic way that draws the viewer in and makes one look forward to the following episodes. The actors are very well-cast; their characters are believable, relatable personalities for three current generations who I know watch this excellent series. With all the competition for viewers of these many different networks we are inundated with, it’s not surprising that the ratings would be thinned out. I… Read more »
I abosolutely love the show “Parenthood”. It should have highter ratings since ALL the actors are great. Especially the younger boy who has autisism. He is a wonderful child actor. Actually, he is so good playing that role, he should get some kind of TV award….such as an Emmy/etc. It has to be hard acting the part of a child with that disability. Also, the daughter who has the alcoholic husband is such a great actress as well as her daughter. Wow, I just love that show. Maybe the shows that are on opposite channels hurt the ratings. What a… Read more »
We love Parenthood! Many others feel the same way! This program speaks to real life situations and personal interactions. We wait for this TV program, and are often disappointed to find hours and hours of the weight loss efforts of a few people and nothing to view that we enjoy. Maybe you could change the time slot and /or date to keep the show on consistently. We think that this program could become a classic like Dallas or Falcon Crest. We find watching it rewarding and heartfelt. It definitely is not so silly as are many of the programs that… Read more »
Please keep parenthood on. My family loves it. We have a son with autism and can relate to the entire family dynamics. We do see a problem for new viewers. The show is hard to understand if it is not caught at the beginning. Maybe a parenthood marathon night before it come back on Jan. 4 th. I had to go online to find out the air date, this is not going to help the ratings. It depicts the typical middle class American family this might be why the network executives are not doing all they can to promo it. Such… Read more »
