The recent end of Penny Dreadful was a bit of a surprise for everyone, except for those behind the scenes. Recently, Showtime CEO David Nevins discussed the series’ abrupt end, TVLine reports.
From John Logan, the supernatural drama took place in Victorian-era London and explored several dark mysteries lying beneath the city’s surface. The cast included Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, and Billie Piper.
At the TCA summer press tour, Nevins said Logan had always planned three seasons of the show:
We could have announced it [was the final season] before the final season, and we decided not to. In [John’s] mind it was always three [seasons] and out. From early on, we were trying to keep it open for possibility of more, but it became clear that trying to continue the show past the life of Vanessa Ives would be a lesserment. And John didn’t really want to continue beyond that character.”
What do you think? Did you watch Penny Dreadful? Are you still sad it’s over?
Penny Dreadful was shamefully abandoned by David Nevins, John Logan, and Showtime. The series finale felt rushed and awkward. As a fan and loyal Showtime customer, I feel betrayed. Do they think loyal fans will believe their ******** story about the series ending after Vanessa’s death at the end of season 3. I have lost all faith in Nevins and Logan. It is quite apparent that the cast and crew feel the same way. Lastly, the Sunday night time slot sucked.
Penny Dreadful was amazing and although I didn’t expect the abrupt ending it was exquisitely done
I do however feel that the show could continue as yet another Penny Dreadful with a different story line and new characters because isn’t that what a Penny Dreadful is?
Thank you so much to the writers, actors , costume designers, set designers, and all those responsible at Showtime who brought this series to life and transported us to a different place and time to visit for a while and thoroughly enjoy all your hard work BRAVO!
Sincerely Ren Binder
Online entertainment news are becoming nothing but pr for networks. The ratings were quite low and Showtime so inelegantly AXED Penny Dreadful. Same thing happened to The Borgias series under the same Showtime management. Meanwhile, other premium networks are getting that you don’t leave your customers high and dry. HBO did a wrap-up movie for Looking (wasn’t great, but I appreciated the gesture) and Startz made a pre-planned final season of DaVinci’s demons and plopped it on OnDemand for the shows small but ardent fans base. Thank you, Starz.
Sorry, but I don’t share your praise of HBO in this sense. One of the main reasons I won’t subscribe to HBO is the way they killed Deadwood (one of the best shows ever) after season 3. They claimed at the time it was “too expensive”. They probably spend more on one episode of Game of Thrones than they did on one season of Deadwood. They left several plotlines hanging and just bailed on it. Not cool.
I’m still upset that Penny Dreadful was cancelled! Great series would love to see more please reconsider and maybe renew it again.
It wasn’t cancelled @Christine..the creator ( John Logan ) decided to wrap it up only 3 seasons 🙂
