NBC has decided to yank their freshman sitcom Perfect Couples from the schedule after April 7th. It’ll be replaced by The Paul Reiser Show on Thursday nights. Does this mean that Perfect Couples is canceled and gone for good?
Perfect Couples revolves around three young couples. Dave (Kyle Bornheimer) and Julia (Christine Woods) are the “everyday couple,” who are messed up in all the “normal” ways. Vance (David Walton) and Amy (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) are the high-passion, high-drama couple. Rex (Hayes MacArthur) is a reformed party guy and Leigh (Olivia Munn) is a self-anointed relationship guru who considers it her duty to mold the other couples in their image.
The NBC sitcom has been struggling in the ratings from the beginning. The network gave it viewers a sneak peak in December and that generated a terrible 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.56 million viewers. A month later, the second episode brought a mediocre 2.1 rating and 4.15 million. The numbers quickly started falling and the latest episode hit a low of a 1.2 rating.
The whole season of Perfect Couples currently averages a 1.5 rating in the demo and just 3.27 million viewers. It’s the lowest-rated scripted series on the network by far and even The Cape has a better season average. Bornheimer has committed to a new FOX pilot while Walton has signed on for a new NBC one.
So, no, NBC has not cancelled Perfect Couples officially, there are many very strong indications that it won’t be back next season. NBC has no incentive to bring it back and even cast one of the sitcom’s actors in one of their new shows.
Right now, it looks like there will be four unaired episodes of Perfect Couples. They may or may not see the light of day at a later date.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Perfect Couples go? Do you think that it still has a chance to return for a second season?
I discovered the show on Hulu. An excellent show. Cancel reality shows and put some good writers to work. Shows need time to find and audience. With all of the venues just put it somewhere! //laughs
I started watching this show for Olivia Munn, FFing any scene without her. By the 3rd episode it’d become my favorite series since The Office; love the strange, random humor; hope I at least get to see the 3 unaired episodes.
I found this show late as well- I barely remember hearing about it- maybe NBC should’ve advertised more or played the first couple after a popular show. I love it though, please bring it back!
Loved Perfect Couples! My husband and I thought it was one of the funniest shows. I hope it comes back!
My husband and never laughed so hard, and we watch all the funny stuff on Thursday nights. Paul Rieser? Not for me… Bring back Perfect Couples!!
Apparently the demographic of people who fall out of their chair laughing at references to Edward Forty-hands is too small to sustain the show. Pity, because that scene made me a fan for life.
This show was so hilarious! I loved it and am so sad that it has been cancelled. It was by far one of the funniest shows I have watched in a long time and was all geared up to get “into” a show again after all this reality stuff seems to have taken over. NBC thought the Paul Reiser show should replace it?? Good grief!!
I love this show! Definitely one of the funniest shows on TV. So sick of reality shows and this show was a breath of fresh air! Keep it around please by giving it a better time slot!
This was by far the funniest, smartest and most relatable comedy on TV this past season. My fiance and I rarely find a program we both enjoy, but this one continued to entertain us. PLEASE give it another shot!
This show was totally hilarious! Bring it back!
One of the funniest feel good shows out there right now! Why on Earth would a show with so much potential be canceled? worst mistake ever! Im pretty disappointed at whoever made that decision.
Perfect Couples was a great show; the cast had amazing chemistry and the writing was dead-on hilarious. I’ve got an idea, NBC execs: from now on, when making television decisions, do the exact opposite of what you think you should do. That way, you’ll avoid garbage like The Paul Reiser Show, The Event, Chase, Outlaw – seriously, NBC; I could go on for years.
I thought this was the funniest show on TV. I found it late and started raving about it to my friends right when they stopped airing the show. Please bring it back. It just needs some time for people to grow in love with the characters. It’s such a great show.
I totally agree. I watched every episode and lol’d a ton. This show was very funny and as a person that hates most sit-coms, this was in fact the ONLY sit-com that I have watched in the past 10 years probably. I think people just weren’t watching it because of it’s timeslot. I dvr’d every episode and miss this show already.
Perfect Couples was totally awesome! My husband and I thought it was the best new show on TV! The cast’s chemistry was amazing and the writing was unique, fun and witty. We also watch Community, the Office, Parks and Rec, and Outsourced. Please bring back Perfect Couple. It was perfect!
What Tracie said! I loved this show. The first episode was rough and a little over the top but the rest were hilarious.
My husband and I loved watching Perfect Couples!!! It barely had a chance to get going- we had just started telling our friends and family about it (and they loved it, too) when we heard that it was going to be cancelled! We used to watch The Office, and we still watch Community sometimes, but once we saw Perfect Couples we were watching it faithfully every week. We think it’s so much funnier than NBC’s other Thursday night shows.
