Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

Prime Suspect is great. Good acting, good stories, and great characters. NBC needs to kook at some of the crap they put out, like Biggest Loser and take that off.
Not surprised, too literate for most viewers. My wife and I have just about given up on the U.S. broadcast networks. Unless you want to watch people get tortured losing weight or beaten senseless in shows like Fear Factor or that gawdawful Japanese reality rip-off on ABC you need to stay with either the premium stations (HBO, etc.,), CBC (that’s Canada for those of you south of Oregon) or PBS. Aside from that it’s pay movies (you all remember – the one’s presented in brick in mortar places or in Red Boxes at the supermarket). And what are we gonna… Read more »
I am so disappointed, I love Prime Suspect!
I thought that Prime Suspect was a pretty good show, they had a varied cast of characters that were true to life. I was in the business for 30 years (NYPD) the story lines were true to life. I really enjoyed watching the show.
NBC finally gives us PRIME SUSPECT, something worth watching…The quality of the series was comparable to many HBO winners. Why cancel it? The actors are superb, the story lines have been of a superior quality, quite a pleasant surprise considering the rubbish the cable viewers have to choose from.
With some luck someone will pick it up for this new season, they certainly would have my vote.

What is NBC thinking. This was the best show on TV. My family loved it and looked
forward to it every Thursday night at 10 P.M. Maria Bello is the best. Are you kidding me taking it off the air. Not a good move NBC.
This show kept getting better and better. Great cast
I think it’s sad that really good cop shows like Prime Suspect and Detroit 187 get cancelled. I, too hope that TNT pick them both up! I’m not looking forward to a winter filled with “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” and that stupid “Super Makeover” crap!
It is so sad that one of the good shows has been cancelled, while all the non-scripted stuff stays on the air. This show should NOT be cancelled, and would be a definite asset to NBC and their desire to grow their viewershp. Just can’t understand their tunnel vision.
Great show. There is so much junk on TV and then when a good show comes along, it gets cancelled!
Totally figures…..every time I like a show with smart acting and characters….cancelled. Yet CRAP continues to be on year after year!!!!
Most of the criticism was the premise–here’s a 2012 NY female cop still battling for equal opportunity, and the excuse here is that she is slam dunk in the middle of Irish and Italian Catholic male supremacy territory, which stereotypes her back into the pre equal opportunity Stone Age, arising from their “traditional family values” which have the female in the family way and not at work. Mind you, these are stereotypes built on stereotypes and fuzzy memories of my friends in NY in the sixties. And the story where the boyfriend becomes knowledgeable about the love affair with a… Read more »
Do NBC execs have an aversion to crime drama? Why are they so eager to cancel good shows? To be replaced by a mindless onslaught of reality and comedies that do what? Certainly, not elevate the human condition. Nooooo! In many of these shows the material is geared toward human debasement! The great ones like Law & Order and all of its spin-offs should have been retained. What is wrong with you people?
It figures ,It was a good show and well written, meanwhile reality crap is out there eating already numb brains
I really like this show. I watch it every week. Have been looking forward to watching it but just thought that it wasn’t on due to the holiday shows. This is a big BUMMER.
