Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

I luv this show. Not as good as the UK version but it’s good. Not sure why NBC put this good show in Thursday.
Everyday Thursday I make sure that I watch it and luv the storyline.
Hopefully another channel can pick it up.
It was the only new show that my husband and I really liked. It has smart writing and an excellent cast. We both got so excited for Thursday night. It was our night and our favorite show. How sad that TV prime time has become pathetic reality shows and once again, we would rather stream than to watch all the crap.
I’m am so sad about this show it was awesome!! So much better than all the reality stuff. Shame on nbc! I’m going to miss it.
WHAT A STUPID, CLASSLESS MOVE FOR. NBC. TO CANCEL ” PRIME SUSPECT ” — the best acted, best written, best produced TV police drama since ‘ NYPD BLUE ‘ and ‘HOMICIDE’. Everyone we know enjoyed it immensely , and I can only hope that NBC gets the class back to return this smart, entertaining, & clever program to air !
A good show bites the dust. Why? I’m sure it costs more to produce than the crap that goes on, ie; biggest loser, bachelor, whitney, just to name a few. Too bad. I’ll have more time to watch cable.
Bummer!! NBC had gotten into a bad habit of cancelling its decent dramas like Prime Suspect, Law and Order: LA, The Event, etc. However, they will keep their brain-dead trashy comedies – and I use that term loosely – like Up All Night and Whitney and Comunity. Go figure.
Excellent, gritty, TV police crime drama, comparable to the very successful The Wire on cable. But perhaps too realistic for mindless network TV. Maybe all cops are like the good guys on Blue Bloods–I doubt it! NYPD Blue had trouble, too, before it caught on, but Prime Suspect is even more real and the characters less loveable. Maybe some cable network will be smart enough to pick it up.
was just thinking about the fabulous technology for tv viewing and the pathetic programming we have to view on it. tsk tsk. no comedy writers, no good drama (except for BBCviaPBS), opinionated journalists…. just lots of sick reality wannabes for a culture on the slide. I’m 63 and have seen it all. This was a good show. damn.
Great show. Very intelligent and the characters were all superb. So sorry it is being cancelled, but there your go — NBC programming does it again.
I am beyond irritated! Loved this show, not only because of Marie Bello, but also the rest of the cast. Boo to NBC.
Wow what a shame! NBC had 3 good shows! Parenthood, Law & Order SVU although without Stabler that show is going down the tubes, and Prime Suspect! Holy s….. NBC look at your Thursday line, crap sitcoms! Oh yeah you totally brought back Jay Leno, his stick was stale before and is equally as bad now. We love you Conan and other shows that have gotten the boot by NBC.
Love this show! Extremely disappointed to hear it probably won’t be back
NBC; what a mistake pulling this show and leaving on crap! Give it a chance for people to get to know the show; seems like every-other-week it was either off or had a rerun on. The characters were just starting to grow and become richer; now it’s gone. I’ll not be watching the garbage that’s replacing it that’s for sure….
I can’t imagine why this show would be canceled. Its a great show! With the cancelation of most of the Law and Orders this is the next best thing. There isn’t another show quite like it right now. I’ll really miss it. =(
I loved this show, acting was great. NBC programing is doing a bad job as well. Demographics need to be changed ,people over 49 still buy products, people are living longer and still buying new products. This stinks, all good shows don’t get the proper chance due to these idiots.
