Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

Maria Bello is a truly great actress. We really enjoy this show and hope it returns!!!NBC should consider taking off other shows, but not this one.
I’m not surprised NBC remains at the bottom of the ratings lists. Their whole network is based on sitcoms and reality junk!!! Any wonder why serious TV viewers are switching over to cable networks? It’s really bad when your your own personalities make fun of you and what they say happens to be TRUE!!!. This show deserved to be produced by a network that had actual TV executives making the decisions rather than SNL ( and it’s off shoots) lovers mkaing the decisions. Hopefully a REAL network will pick it up.
One of the best cop shows of the season. Maria Bello had her character down pat! Hoping another network picks it up.
We think it is an excellent show, and are very sorry to see that it has been cancelled. There are so few programs that have as excellent a cast and as interesting and believeable scripts as this show. Diana and Bob Simon
Of all the junk they put on I thought this was a good show. Bello is a great actress and I thought she owned the part. Year after year it never fails they cram junk down in our face and take the good stuff off. I guess it wasn’t raunchy enough for the folks on the ratings machines
this was one of the best shows on tv. no wonder nbc is on the bottom.
This quality program was obviously too good for commercial television. I’m making a contribution to PBS in the hope they can pick this up and run with it. After all it was where the original Prime Suspect started in the first place.
Very disappointed in NBC
What in the world are you thinking NBC…apparently you haven’t asked the right people…This show is awesome!..gritty and suspenseful which many are not! Very disappointed if this show is not coming back…get rid of something else, because this one needs to stay!
NBC sucks!! Prime Suspect is a great great show! Great acting and story line all around. Goes to show you that the dumber a show is, the more likely it will be renewed. There are tons of shows currently running that aren’t worth the time.
Get your heat out of your a** NBC!
A huge disappointment. They really should give it a chance. If they keep this up the only shows on TV would be so called reality TV. Which I definitely not interested in.
In a tv world where reality shows are taking over (ho hum), this was a show that had real meat to it. In fact, it had become a favorite of mine with a strong leading woman role and writing that built suspense and a sense of being on the streets in the world of crime. No roses, just thorns, for NBC cancelling this show.
Another show with grit and intelligence cancelled by network television!
NBC you are pitiful!
I am very sorry to see this show canceled. We have many “crime dramas” but none with such a strong female lead. I too will miss my Thursday night fix. Can NBC reconsider this? As one of the 4. whatever million, I say NBC needs strong shows and you have a great opportunity here.
I completely agree. Everytime a new exciting, interesting new show is launched it gets canned. I dont know why I bother getting hooked on any new shows since they all get cancelled. But all of the reality shows like grey ‘s anatomy, private practice and tons of other shows that revolve around sex and the same recycled story lines stay on air. All shows with strong women get cancelled. Lipstick jungles, Mercy and Trauma. What a joke.
I amreally disappointed in the annoucement that this show is going to be canceled. I really enjoyed this program as it had humor, drama and action. When NBC finally gets a good program that don’t stand behind. Maybe if they would have put it at an earlier time then it would have been viewed by more people.
