Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

I am so disappointed to read this…it was one of my favorite new shows and one of the only ones I made sure to watch each week…I’ve been waiting for the next show…watching online when I had to & several times each episode, the characters are so great!!!!! I really want to keep watching this, not that crap reality stuff that is really fake & cheap…give us back this show!!!
I was wondering what happened, as I looked forward to watching this on Thursday night. It was definitely not as good as the Helen Mirren thing but I dug the characters and was glad to see Aidan Quinn in a quirky role. American television…alas.
This was the best show on TV this season! Just as ABC cancelled Detroit 187. Somewhere someone has gotten the idea that viewers only want to see “reality” or “make me a star” shows. How disappointing!!
Boo! Loved this show, not many good cop shows with females in the lead!
Wow! Such a disappointment!! It was a great show my husband and I loved and looked forward to each week! Maybe a cable channel can pick it up?
Not happy! I really enjoyed the show. Reminds me of Olive Garden, they give you a taste of a new item on the menu and just when you find you like it they take it away.
This is one of three shows i watched on tv and its gone and all thats left is crap
I loved Prime Suspect and I’m really sorry it’s cancelled. I just found out and I’m really disappointed.
Its no wonder NBC has lost their #1 ranking. They just cancel the good shows.
So sorry this has been cancelled. It is an intelligent and realistic view of real people doing a job that is difficult to say the least and not appreciated by the majority of us. The roles are mature and well played, the plot is multi layered so you can understand what makes the characters tick. So very sorry NBC couldn’t keep this going. Hopefully, there will be another opportunity for this series to saved.
I agree with Jo Spencer. This MINDLESS reality crap is far from entertainment. I don’t know why it is forced upon us – they should have one reality channel for all mindless reality shows. No need to have it on the hot ticket stations. As far as Prime Suspect being cancelled, I think it sucks. I loved the show – Maria Bello showed grit and the storyline was just getting interesting. NBC – you suck teddybears!
Ditto what everyone else said! NBC, this loyal viewer is about done with you! You better not mess with harry’s law or parenthood or I’m official outta here! 🙁
I wonder who the networks contact to determine how many people watch particular shows. I know they never contact me. I’m disappointed that Prime Suspect is being cancelled. I think it was one of the better shows.
Cancelled? We get mindless reality crap and you cancel a good show. Put it back on it is an excellent show, why don’t you try asking your viewers instead of the idiot advertisers.
Finally, a great show is aired, one to look forward to and it gets cancelled! Yet all those stupid sitcoms stay with the same laugh track running over and over. Maria Bello is mesmerizing and intense and you are throwing it all away. Shame on you.
