Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

I really love this show. The only good thing I can say about its cancellation (if that is actually what is happening), is that I will be watching far less TV on Thursday nights. What with The Office having thoroughly lost any hint of funny and Whitney being replaced by yet ANOTHER family show, there’s no reason to watch past 8 (central).
I loved this show. Maria Bello is fantastic. I hope this show will be back. We need more evening entertainment like Prime Suspect instead of all the news and reality shows.
I loved the show and thought it was better than most of the other police type shows.
This was such a smart, well-written show with awesome acting. Why would NBC cancel it? My husband and I looked forward to it every Thursday. It was a nice addition to a traditionally best night on TV.
I am really disappointed. I really enjoyed the show, I love the actors and I think the characters had great chemistry. There is a lot of crap on tv, it is a shame to see a good show get canceled.
I enjoyed the show, it needed character development , which was happening. I wish that NBC would give this show a chance I am really angry it is my favorite new show. It is real.
I made space in my very busy life for this show on Thursday night. I am really sorry thaat this show won’t return. Not a good decision on the part of NBC. Like so many other programs that turned out to be classics, with more support, this would have been a classic too.
Followed the show. Bello and rest of cast were great. Needed better writing and story lines. Otherwise, it was just another cop show.
I liked the show. It had a terrible time slot …it was up against a really tough field of veteran shows. They should have brought it back in a new time slot and let people see some more of it. If they put one more reality show on I will scream………
My husband and I LOVED the scripts, actors and especially Maria Bello. This is typical of the quality that has totally disappeared from network TV.
Why would NBC cancel this show? The acting is great and the stories compelling. Wait I know- they needed room on the schedule for more “reality” shows!
I love this show. The characters are real and the plots are intersting. Please no more reality shows.
Unbelievable. NBC has done it again. Stupid decisions on the best show this season. The show “Life” was also excellent and it was cancelled so Jay Leno could be on prime time. It is messed up.
Thank god. Now there will be more room for game shows and reality shows. For people who can’t figure out where reality is.
I can’t believe you went and canncelled “Prime Suspect” what were you thinking???? I was just getting into the show. you need to give the show a better chance then you did.
