Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

I just got back from vacation to find out this show is canceled. I am disappointed. I loved Prime Suspect. I’m not surprised, though. None of the good shows make it.
I agree with all of you supporting that great TV show. Everything in it is excellent : writing, casting, editing, filming. Then only one question : why cancelling that jewel ? No reason but ratings and money again. They don’t even give them a real chance. They made their decision after only 8 episodes. Tough decision. When a cop show is a bit too realistic (and not so polished), he got trashed. Poor heartless TV executives !
Maria Bello’s role didn’t impress me in that first show where she had to go up against all the rest in the squad room… then to take the place of a beloved police detective that got killed. It was grim and showed me no promise. Then I happened to watch it since, and just LOVE it. Bello’s role is great. There’s humor, heart, rational outcomes that leave me feeling good.
This is an excellent police procedural and Maria Bello is outstanding with a great ensemble also. It would really be a shame if it doesn’t come back, either on NBC or another channel. NBC needs to keep its eye on the prize and this is one of them.
Prime Suspect is such a good show. So, disappointing to hear that it will be cancelled!
its too much to ask for good programing. too bad the execs only care about the bottom line they wont take a chance on a good program. all we can hope for now is that some one will piss in their coffee or spit on their burger. please if you know them… let them know that most sane people wont let set top boxes monitor our likes and dislikes for their perverse pleasure. Nielsen ratings are not accurate. This show had potential and this is why nbc is failing the ratings game along with the rest of the on air… Read more »
TNT should pick them up
PLEASE do not cancel this show. It’s the best of all new shows and it’s as good as The Closer, Law and Order, Good Wife (all of our favorite shows)!!! PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL. Maybe TNT can pick it up?
You ******** cancel every good show that comes around The way you guys rate the show is all wrong. Most people like myself record it on DVR and watch it when I can, There are millions of us that do that with lots of shows. You should take that into account. Keep Prime Suspect on the air. Millions of people watch it.
NBC, you are completely NOT GETTING IT if you cancel this show. It’s actually an intelligent show amongst a bunch of vacuous crap. Listen to viewers.
I was just turned on to Prime Suspect. I liked it, and I’m disappointed that it will not continue.
One of the few shows I watch regularly. Great cast. Sorry to see it go.
All those dumb comedies with their laughtracts stay on.
Please do not cancel Prime Suspect. It moves fast and the cast is great. NBC cancels its new shows too soon.
it’s improved after an unevn start. the strategy of jane vs the squad room was dated, and it didn’t immediately create the kinda buzz that it needed to draw in bigger audience. i love maria, and the cast was good too
Great show! I will be extremely disappointed to see it go. It is gritty, smart and halarious. The cast is phenominal. This is a GREAT DRAMA! While we’re at it, The Playboy Club was smart too. You lost Katie and now this. What is up NBC?
