Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

Another comment as several people have thought of it. Please don’t cancel this is a very good show and as others have said it’s in the wrong time slot you put it up against the Mentalist how dumb was that.. It is not the same as the uk’s show I found that boring. This is America’s version the writting is great and the acting fantastic Maria Bello is great. As usual the good one’s go by the wayside and the junk stays on.I’m so sick of these reality shows which aren’t reality If it’s not smutty and stupid it goes off.… Read more »
huge disappointment to see that one of the best new shows of the season is not getting the respect it deserves; acting, plots, and production are excellent and getting even better. it’s astonishing to see a show this good being replaced by an an insipid sitcom or, even worse, another idiotic reality show.
This is my favorite show. Finally, a great cast and characters, interesting storylines. I want this show to stay on the air. What can be done?
I can’t believe they are cancelling this show!! Any fan of NYPD Blue can see that this is a GREAT show…..gritty New York detectives with quick wit, dry senses of humor, and SMART. Awesome characters, excellent stories. I’m so tired of good shows getting cancelled because America is too busy watching reality TV crap. Hope that TNT picks it up and saves the show like they did for Southland….ANOTHER great cop show!
I really enjoyed this series. I am so disappointed it has been cancelled because the main character is excellent and the supporting characters are excellent as well. The stories are gritty and engrossing. I think the relationships between the main characters are more realistic than most cop shows. Sometimes they don’t like each other very much but if the job needs to get done they overlook their differences to solve the crime at hand.
A big mistake for NBC. The shots of NYC from above are beautiful. Please don’t cancel this show.
I hadn’t known of or made the connection with the British show of the same name. I LOVE this show, and have many friends that do. I was worried when off the bat they put it against The Mentalist, which was an established popular show. Did they WANT it to fail? Yes, we’re doomed for more Whitney, but worse….fast talking ****** negative humor ala Chelsea Handler. What’s next, a sitcom with Howard Stern playing a porn talent scout getting into zany situations? I’m really through with NBC. I made a point of watching this show since it started, as do… Read more »
Wonderful show. I think that Maria Bello is the most interesting actor on TV, and the show has been character-driven rather than just another procedural. That’s why it was only going to get better. I hope that a cable channel will give it that chance.
This has been one of the best this season. Excellent acting, good stories. Weakest was the romance. Wrong chemistry. Watched every episode, admittedly watched on Hulu.com on my own schedule. Hate to see it go. Not many good shows out there.
I look forward to this show every week. With PVR’s and other recording devices how can anyone rely on ratings anymore. This show is the best show on TV right now. I love that everyone looks normal and aren’t glossed over like other shows…its just real looking!! I hope they bring this show back, everyone just works so well together!
I very much enjoyed this series. One of the best on prime tv — if you’re looking for quality.
This was a well-written, well-acted show that deserves to be on the air. I too am tired of them cancelling shows a month after they are aired. Give them a chance! A lot of the shows that became big were on shaky ground the first year or two. There is nothing on TV to watch anymore except for ridiculous reality shows. I also loved Detroit 187 (I think that was the title) and that too got cancelled. It had a great story line and great characters like Prime Suspect. Give the show a chance!!!
One of the best cop shows out there. As real as it gets and NBC does not get it. No wonder cable shows do so much better, Like someone said, NBC would not know a good show if it kicked them in the head. What do we get now. more Whitney?
I enjoyed the show. I am getting tired of networks dumping shows so quickly. Makes me want to go back and start watching movies again as networks keep dumping good shows. This is just another loss for women in lead roles. pretty sad. I don’t think I have anything left to watch on NBC now. Nope, I’m wrong there is still “Harry’s Law”.
Prime Suspect is a well written with great characters as usual network tv can’t see a goodshow if they were kicked in the head. Too much”Reality” Tv and I want real entertainment back
This “Prime Suspect” should not have been launched as a “remake” of the fine Helen Mirren series, a move that might have been offputting to the average Joe viewer….It stands on its own, with excellent writing, good ensemble work and fine videography. These cops get dirty, look genuinely tired, and act as if they really are working their asses off, unlike the prettied up people on all the CSI shows. A real loss, if this decision stands, with Bello superb in the lead role.
