The Recovery Road TV show on Freeform has been cancelled after its first season. While Freeform has not published an official cancellation notice to its press site, Recovery Road‘s creator and executive producer, Holly Sorensen, has announced Recovery Road‘s cancellation, on Twitter. The Recovery Road TV series stars Jessica Sula, Sebastian de Souza, Alexis Carra, Daniel Franzese, Kyla Pratt, David Witts, Caroline Sunshine, and Sharon Leal.
You will find a series of Sorensen’s tweets, below. Her first tweet directly addressing the cancellation reads: “i am as proud of @RecoveryRoad as anything ive done and i didn’t create it. im heartbroken it ends after ten amazing episodes. [sic]” She later tweeted, “rip @RecoveryRoad. [sic]”
Smart money says the cancellation is due to ratings. Recovery Road‘s season one ratings were anemic. The Y/A addiction recovery drama averaged a 0.18 in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and drew an average total audience of 0.46 million viewers.
Out of the 11 Freeform series’ ratings we tracked during the 2015-2016 television season, Recovery Road came in 9th out of 11, above only Stitchers and the cancelled series, Kevin from Work.
The tweets pointing to Recovery Road‘s cancellation began yesterday, when the Numb3rs TV show creator, Cheryl Heuton, tweeted, “Is it just me, or is this more than the usual number of last-minute cancellations?”
Sorensen replied, “having a bad flashback to the day you sit waiting by the phone on this day and it doesn’t ring until the bad news. [sic]”
Lizzy Weiss, the creator of Switched at Birth, which is cancelled after its fifth season coming to Freeform in January 2017, tweeted about the end of production on that series. She wrote, “The finale of #SwitchedatBirth is now locked. As I drive off from Santa Clarita, a final shot of the writers’ bldg.”
In response, Sorensen said, “Feeling you honey. I know that drive.” Her next tweet reads, “i am as proud of @RecoveryRoad as anything ive done and i didn’t create it. im heartbroken it ends after ten amazing episodes. [sic]”
She then posted a photo from the series, captioned with, “rip @Recovery Road. [sic]” Soon after, she tweeted another imaged captioned, “@RecoveryRoad rip. [sic]”

Not familiar with the series? Here is Freeform’s Recovery Road TV series synopsis:
Based on the popular young adult novel by Blake Nelson, “Recovery Road” focuses on Maddie, a teenage girl dealing with addiction. Maddie has a reputation as a party girl who doesn’t think she has a problem, until she’s confronted one day by her school guidance counselor and is forced to choose between expulsion and rehab. Maddie makes the difficult decision to live with other recovering addicts at a sober living facility while facing the daily pressures of her teenage life.
“Recovery Road” stars Jessica Sula (“Skins”) as Maddie, Sebastian de Souza (“The Borgias”), Sharon Leal (“Dreamgirls”), Alexis Carra (“Mixology”), Kyla Pratt (“Dr. Doolittle”), Daniel Franzese (“Mean Girls”), and David Witts (“EastEnders”). The pilot was written by Bert V. Royal (“Easy A”) and Karen DiConcetto (“Ruby & The Rockits”), who will also serve as executive producers, alongside Holly Sorenson (“Make It or Break It”), Danielle VonZerneck (“Left to Die”), and Craig Piligian (“Abducted: The Carlina White Story”), and Beth Miller (“Revenge of the Bridesmaids”) from Pilgrim Studios.
Are you a fan of the Recovery Road TV series on Freeform? Do you think Freeform was right to cancel the show? Should Freeform have renewed Recovery Road for a second season? Sound off, in the comments.
This was actually a show with a real life situation that can help spread drug and alcoholic use awareness how could they cancel it? Instead they keep the supernatural non realistic shows, which sure have cool effects but seriously? This show could’ve had a huge impact if given a second chance.
‘Hi, I’m OriAnna and I’ … think this show is one of the best shows on freeform. It needs to be renewed. I had no idea they were going to cancel this show. I used to rush home with my boyfriend to be on time for the next newest show. If I missed 2 minutes, I was livid. But sadly all good things must come to an end and personally, all these other pointless shows should have been cancelled instead. This actually made a difference for real life people’s problems. It sure made a difference in mine and it helped… Read more »
I’m not a TV watcher, but this show was amazing. I can’t remember the last time I made sure not to miss an episode of something. This is definitely one show that should be brought back!
This just has to remind us that the smartest people aren’t always making the best decisions when it comes to continuing or cancelling a show. This was a great show dealing with very real issues and it was a real eye-opener for me.
It’s one of those shows that you felt just might turn someone’s life around ! I really enjoyed the chemistry of the cast. Would be really nice if they reconsidered bringing it back.
It was such a great show and the writers were great. I think it was emotionally involved and that really gets you into the show. It sucks that the show only lasted 1 season. I hope she comes back and ends up bringing the show back. I don’t think she realizes how many people actually watch this and they probably relate to it. I can’t relate to it but I am very interested in recovery shows even though it wasn’t real. It felt like it was real because you would feel so glued to the TV. I’d wonder what would… Read more »
I read the entire book and watched the first season. I loved it and i pray they bring the show back for several seasons cause its so related to those of us struggling with addiction. It also tells a good love story between Maddie and Wes. #BringBackRecoveryRoad2017
I think I was wrong of them to cancel the show it was going great like at least give us a season 2. #ihatethis
It makes me so sad to see Recovery Road to go because I loved it from the very beginning and to finally hear that there will be no season 2 just makes me mad. They did the same thing with the Nine Lives of Chloe King back when it was ABC family. Why keep leaving me with these big cliff hangers anyways. BC when I start to love a show I get really dedicated and never miss an episode but now it makes me not wanna watch anything new because it may get cancelled……
Recovery Road was a great show that tied the strings of life with the struggle that comes with it. This show was very relatable to not only the standard alcoholic or druggy but also family and friends affected. It was also great entertainment and it’s very sad to see it go.
With all of the addiction in the world right now, I think there needs to be more of these shows!! It may just save someone’s life! It was an awesome show, and ridiculous to cancel it! At least finish other seasons on netflix or somewhere! You can’t leave us hanging with that ending.
Personally I have been struggling with addiction and my life was a lot like maddies. I had the little rehab love as well like her n wes with their connection and the confusion and trying to bring each other up and not fall back down. It made me also take a deeper look within as I am still in recovery and trying to understand more and even change my ways of thinking and so much more. I keep looking for season 2 online for the begin date every so often just to see they havent changed their mind. I’m also… Read more »
I admired this show.. Hoping it was going to come back with a season two. But sadly it is canceled, i wish it wasn’t to be honest. Bringing it back would be so wonderful. One season wasn’t enough, i bet the ratings would’ve been higher by season two
I keep convincing myself that the new season is coming out one day. #SuperPissed
So upset that Recovery Road was cancelled! What a great show and cast. Free form made a huge mistake!
no it should not have been cancelled, i live i England so i have to watch it online but i love it. it is so good and it shows the real struggles of addiction and life in general we need this show back, we need more shows like this. if freeform wont take this back then i think another company should
Y’all need to atlease finish with a season 2 then kill everyone off or something you can’t just end it like that . Smh I’m very aggravated right now !
