On Friday at 8pm, NBC debuted a new reality series called School Pride. How does this one stack up? — a quick success or another candidate for quick cancellation?
School Pride tells the stories of communities who come together to renovate broken and aging public schools. The series follows parents, teachers, and students as they roll up their sleeves to make some positive changes. Hosts are Susie Castillo, Jacob Soboroff, Tom Stroup, and Kym Whitley.
In its first airing, School Pride attracted a meager 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.901 million total viewers. It landed in third place in the timeslot, tying with a repeat of No Ordinary Family on ABC.
The networks have lower expectations for Friday nights and reality programming but this is still a terrible showing. In the prized demo, it’s about half of what Dateline attracted a week earlier in the same timeslot.
Eight episodes of School Pride have been produced. NBC may let them all air but, based on this quantity of ratings, there doesn’t seem like much reason for the network to order a second season.
What do you think? Did you like School Pride or should it be cancelled?

The show really illustrates the facilities problems in the schools. How in the world can we expect world-class achievement when we have poverty-class schools? I am annoyed by all the product placement, but I guess that’s how things get paid for. Maybe I am paranoid, but I am also wary of hidden messages, such as a colonial mentality of white people saving the black people as in the one in Baton Rouge, not to mention the shameless promotion of TFA, and a less subtle promotion of charter schools, and teachers as the problem. This is what the superintendent said was… Read more »
KEEP IT ON! This is a good presentation of giving back to the community. It shows people across the US the NEED to GIVE BACK and restores hope to those who many have given up on. KEEP IT ON!
KEEP IT!!
This is exactly the kind of feel good, motivate you to give back, be more socially responsible kind of show that we need more of!!
Please keep it! There are so many schools across the country that desperately need renovating and this show can make a much needed, and positive, diffence for thousands of kids.
Please keep this program!!! We need this now, we need to give kids HOPE!
This show needs to stay on!!!!!!!! This is a great way to show what can be done in our country for our schools and for OUR KIDS!!!!!I love this show. There are soooooo many schools in need of this. Keep this show on PLEASE!!!!!!!
How does one sign up to volunteer to help out?
Cancel. I tuned in tonight because as a charter school facilities consultant and former TFA corps member I was interested in seeing what the show was about. I’m not opposed the mission. I was annoyed and furious with the drama. Not a single ball in an elementary school! Really!! I can’t believe that those teachers would not have made sure the those kids had at least one ball to play with, even if they had to buy the ball themselves. Teachers do it all the time. I did it on the regular on my starting teacher salary. We don’t need… Read more »
I truely believe and hope that “SCHOOL PRIDE ” is one program that will stay on tv. Out of all the talk about education, no child left behind and the children are the future it is nice to see that someone siting behind a desk at NBC realize that the education system in America in a HOT STINKY MESS. I agree with Eliz. Scher NBC you have to promote it better it is a good show please promote it better. Our children need help to get a good education. It is time that this problem brought to the fore front… Read more »
Keep it! even though there are those who have plenty of negative things to say obviously because its not your child’s school! but this does make a difference some may think OH now they leave & who will keep it up.. how about maybe now people will be motivated to seek out assistance to keep it going , or the communities will come closer & work together to maintain the schools.. great things can happen or some Cynical skeptics could kill the dream with all the things that will go wrong. Dag people think positive & stop killing dreams.. you… Read more »
KEEP IT!!!! I have watched this program and I enjoy seeing the pride in the students, the teachers, the parents, and the volunteers before – during- and after the school has been transformed. It is very good show compared to some of the other reality shows that are not worth watching. This is about the education of our future. Thanks to all for doing what needs to be done.
I would like to see “School Pride” kept on the air. I volunteered for the reonnovation they did to Communication and Media Arts High School in Detroit. I taught there 13 years ago, and some of the students (who are now 3o years old) came back to help as well. It was wonderful to see my former students, who cared so much about the school to come back and help fix it up. These students have done so much with so little. They’ve gone on to be lawyers, teachers, business owners; some are even involved in dong things like planting… Read more »
keep school pride. i would love to find out how to get involved.
PLEASE keep this show. It is heartwarming to see education, teachers and students in a positive light.
Keep it. Some of the schools are falling apart and are hazardous to the health of those who work and learn there. It is so nice to see this being done for the older schools around the country. Keep up the good work.
Keep this show going! Education is a crisis in America. I don’t even have kids and I enjoy this show! I’m also a law enforcement officer who is a mentor in the HISD school system. Maybe more professionals will get involved in their communitites after seeing just how much the schools need and how many of our kids are being left behind because of the red tape. This show is a keeper!!!!
