Tonight marks the end of the third season of the Sleepy Hollow TV show on FOX and it very well may end up being the series finale as well. The show has been doing very poorly in the ratings and now, the producers have made a move that will likely infuriate more than a few loyal viewers. Should this Friday night show be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
A supernatural police drama, Sleepy Hollow follows Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), a patriot who was killed 230 years ago. He finds himself resurrected in modern-day and partners with a female police lieutenant (Nicole Beharie). The cast also includes Lyndie Greenwood, Shannyn Sossamon, Nikki Reed, Lance Gross, and Zach Appelman.
The series was a hit in its early days but those great ratings are long gone. This season, Sleepy Hollow premiered to a 0.98 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.36 million viewers. Compared to the third season debut, the debut was down by a whopping 51% in the demo and down by 38% in viewership. SPOILER AHEAD.
The numbers got worse as the season progressed so the execs sent the series to Friday nights, likely hoping that the show’s loyal fans would follow and the ratings would stay at the same level. They looked stable for awhile but the numbers got even worse over the course of the rest of the season. The last couple episodes have attracted about a 0.65 rating with 2.6 million.
And now, in tonight’s finale, the producers have killed off one of the show’s lead characters — Abbie Mills, as played by Nicole Beharie. The executive producers, studio, and network released this statement to EW:
“The finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales. We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we’ve seen on-screen. We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollow to life. We are currently discussing season 4, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”
With such poor ratings, Sleepy Hollow, once again, is very much in danger of being cancelled. Now that one of the main characters has been killed off, should the series return? Should they bring Abbie back somehow or, is it okay that she’s gone? What do you think?
I probably won’t watch if Abby doesn’t return
The show needs to continue. It is not only a form of entertainment, but it also educates us on major historical events. It is interesting how the history is incorporated into the supernatural aspect to bind education with entertainment. Just because the ratings are down doesn’t me the public doesn’t see the show. I am one of the many fans who watches on Hulu. It would be nice to see Abbie return, however, she was such a huge part of the show and I hate when a series ends in a major cliffhanger with the main character’s death. Nowadays, it… Read more »
I love this show and it is my favorite. I cut out cable because it was getting too expensive. But I never miss an episode. I watch it on HULU faithfully.
I also cut the cable cord to save dollars (over $70 per month) and now faithfully watched and re-watched Sleepy Hollow on Hulu. Will miss Abby but love Tom Mison as Crane and want very much to see what happens next. Love all the history references and playing around with historical events in the show.
I love this show because of the historical aspects of it. It is a unique show that should not be dismissed so easily. In a world where there is too much reality TV, this show provides an escape from the norm.
Bring it back. Bring Abbie back!
Before the finale, I would have asked that the show be picked up. Now that the Abbie character is dead, I say cancel the show. Crane and Abbie made the show watchable. To think that you can dispose of a man character and the fans would not react in a negative way, you people live in some kind of vacuum. What’s the point in a twitter or facebook and the other social media outlets? Don’t you read why the fans enjoy the show? It’s the actors that bring those characters alive.
Please bring back Abbie Mills. The chemistry between her and Ichabod was awesome. Please renew the show for those loyal fans. Friday nights was much better than Thursday anyway because you were competing with Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. Please renew Sleepy Hollow, we love it.
I am devastated by the loss of Abbie, the chemistry of these two characters is a rare occurrence on today’s TV dramas, since when do the 18-49 year olds control what shows stay on TV???? Sleepy Hollow has a following the likes of the X Files, bring it back, and Ms.Beharie, not as Abbie, but the next descendent in her blood line, obviously the make department can do wonders, we have all witnessed that, week after week. This show has great potential, please don’t discard it.
maybee Morgan Freeman will take the job 🙂
Please renew! I’ll watch no matter what!
I love the show…. however abbie needs to come back. Make it so that she is summoned back by the horseman. Or something. Try bringing back some of the characters that made sleepy hollow so loved from the beginning.
The series should be renewed this is one of my favorite shows and it can’t end this way. Crane has to find Abbie.
I and friends love this show, so we are hoping for renewal.
All my friends love the show, too, and want it to be renewed.
Sleepy Hollow should most defiantly be renewed! I was angry to see them kill off Abbie…. so I will anxiously wait for the next season…. and hope they find a way to bring back Abbie…. but please don’t cancel yet another good show!
I am a big fan – always waiting for the new episode. I want my show back and I would really like to see Abbie again
It was sad to see Abbie die, but it was also a great episode and good to see a show move forward doing the hard stuff, like killing off two characters. It keeps the show evolving. Crane, played by Tom Mison does a fabulous job in this role. Hope this show gets another season. Sleepy Hollow got weighed down with Crane’s wife and son story last season, it sort of lost its way, but this season has been great.
