Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

I think this show is hysterical. Please don’t cancel it.
Please give it a chance. American dad is the biggest POS ever. It was nice to have a good sitcom for a change. Like others have said, it was a rare show that me and my 17yr old sat down to watch together everyweek.
sons of tucson is a funny show it has my hole family laughing me and my family cound not wait for sunday we wood all sit down and whatch it together now we haft to find a diffent show to whatch together so i hope they put it back on.
strangely it had that malcolm feel and i watched it with my daughter the same way i used to watch malcolm in the middle with my mom. its a great show and i have a strange crush on tyler labine LOL so i will miss this if it doesnt come back 🙁
I’m a 24 year college student who’s a senior. So everybody knows we get pretty busy, but anyways I looked forward to watching the show every week, especailly to get my mind of school work. I don’t get to see it on Sunday’s because I’m in a Fraternity and I get extremely busy with school work and Fraternity stuff, so when ever I get a break I watch it on Hulu.com, best website ever. So bring my show back, and give them a chance.
I Loved this show!! My husband thought i was nuts at first, but after 10 minutes of watching it….he was hooked too. The only thing we would change is the infleuance of drugs….we didnt like that. Since we have it DvR’d, i am curious if that counts against the ratings, because as they say above 9:30 is a horrible time slot….but with that said, every couple days my husband would ask me if there was a Sons of Tuscon show ready to be watched. I hope they dont cancel it for good, i think this show has the possibility that… Read more »
This could have been a great chance for a network like FOX to show the diversity that is abundant in Tucson, Arizona. But just like all of the “new” sitcoms. it is just another show that stereotypes Hispanics. You know, all of us really don’t talk like that and there are thousands and thousands of us that were born right here in the USA. We are proud of our culture and heritage, but you would never know that by watching this show. Apparently we all have a “mexican” accent and we all just crossed over the Rio Grande yesterday. What’s… Read more »
I don’t understand your comment. I do not remember in any episode where they were talking “mexican” as you so put it.
If anyone is being made fun of it would be the WHITE, overweight, un-responsible man playing the “dad”….I don’t see them making fun of any race in this show.
Why does everything always have to be about race???
im 24 and think the show is hilarious. love it. does TiVo/DVR count as ratings?
I think that this show really needs a chance. I bet the most viewers of the series are fans of Malcolm In The Middle. FOX needs to bring back that kid-like, troublemaking, single camera look, style, and humor Malcolm kept (especially for a family sit-com, and not the laugh track kind). It feels like the old days again (Arrested Development, 24, Family Guy, Futurama, King Of The Hill, House MD, Malcolm In The Middle) when tuning into FOX actually meant something. Sons Of Tucson brings back those memories in an extremely, good, hilarious, and entertaining way. FOC just can’t take… Read more »
this show was funny and refreshing, my son and i had not wanted to watch a show together since Boston legal. so for a 10 year old kid and a 30 year old mom that says it all! The show transcends age groups!
My daughter and I loved this show….I can’t believe they’d pull it without giving it a chance to be seen. I told my parents to watch it after I DVR’d all the episodes and they loved it. I hope they put it back on the air.
I put it right up there with My Name is Earl and the Office. Both of those shows didn’t do that great in the begining, but look at where they went when they were given the chance!
GREAT SHOW! LOVE TO SEE WHAT’S IN STORE!!!
If I DVR this show, did it show up in the ratings?
P.S. The show needs to rapidly add more characters to the show. Labine needs to get in shape!
I loved the show and was looking forward to seeing the next episode. I was searching my tvo to see what went wrong; I started accusing family members of deleting it from my tvo!
I can’t wait to see the next episode.
im bummed me and a few friends would get together sunday nights just to watch this show and laugh. whatever time it airs im sure ill watch it. i even downloaded the episodes from itunes
Why won’t they ever give a show a fair chance? On the fourth or fifth week when they changed the time, I missed it because I looked for it at 8:30. They hardly promoted it at all. I think if they could put it on Friday or Saturday, there would be lots of people looking for something fun to watch.
