Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

BRING IT BACK!!! people just need to watch it once and then your hooked…..
lol i’m asian and even i love the show. i think part of the reason why the ratings are so low is because of lack of advertising the show. take glee for example, if it werent for the constant advertising between shows and commercials, i would have never knew what a good show it was.
Great show ppl in Canada love it!!!!!
this show is great if it gets canceled ill be sad
The way to support this show and make Fox understand how much you like it is to buy the episodes each week for $1.99 on itunes. I do, and I can’t believe how much funnier the show is when you watch it over several more times… It’s like “comfort food”, love to watch Tyler go to it, his selfish character consistently forced to choose his more tender empathetic side, to his benefit or detriment, however you look at it. This show has brilliant writers, never ceases to intrigue me with it’s odd story lines. What’s with Tyler cooking his friend… Read more »
Good show!
After seeing the show last Sunday following my other fav shows … My family and I look forward to this Sunday at 7:30… Same mommy from Chicago and also soon to be student at second city here in Chicago …
My family and my friends LOCK THIS SHOW DOWN on their DVRs.
One of the best sitcoms on TV, up there with THE MIDDLE and 30 RoCK.
Don’t take it away – we can only imagine all the weird scenarios Tyler and his boys can get themselves into… and it will be hilarious to watch! I buy each episode on itunes.
Sons of Tucson is my favorite TV show. I try to race home to watch it, but inevitably I never know when it’s on! I hope it doesn’t get cancelled because the laughs are “roll on the floor” ones!
OMG … It’s the new Jack Black!!!! The next Chris Farley!!! This show will make it.. Whoever passes this will regret it. This will be big 🙂 a mommy from Chicago
Lot of Troy’s info is incorrect. Show wasn’t bought by another network, still playing on Fox just at an earlier time of 7:30pm on Sundays. As for the writing, an opinion is subjective so i won’t say Troy is wrong, but i happen to think the writing is very funny and that Tyler was great in the Chicken Pox episode and I look forward to seeing the remaining episodes.
Actually the show was bought from another network and they showed it last Sun at 7:30 PM Pacific time. It was a new episode, but yea writting is still poor.
I like the show and the premise but, it needs to work more on the scripts. The one with the guy stealing from his granny while running from his bookie was hilarious, but the other scripts looked rushed and rough. Take the time to polish the scripts and you could have a TV Land future classic. I’m crossing my fingers that it is on the fall lineup.
I just happened onto this show “Chickenpox” and it was hilarious. Why haven’t I heard about Sons of Tuscon before?
I love the show. I hope it gets renewed. I agree that it would probably do better on a different night. It just doesn’t really fit well with the animated shows.
