Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
Bring it back please. If nothing else just bring it back as a Netflix show
This show was amazing. Is amazing. I loved it. I recently started watching it and finished it due to the lack of amazing episodes. I think it need to be restarted and yes, i realize it was the last show that a WONDERFUL actor Michael Clarke Duncan made. R.I.P. But I think it should be restarted. I as well as many people loved it.
I do not have cable and only recently heard about this show on Netflix & just like Bones I LOVED it. Network’s need to relize that a lot of people like me do not have cable so just because ratings are low does not mean it’s a bad show or no one likes it they just dont know about it I see to many great showes cancelled because of ratings being low & that’s dumb.
Put Finder back on, we spent three nights going through series 1, Great Show!
I think you should definitely restart airing this show Maybe as a Netflix TV show
Same as most before me said… found this on Netflix do to my interest in the Psych series. Can’t believe this show only went 1 season. To bad would have been a big follower. Don’t know if it would work as well without Michael Clarke Duncan (R.I.P.), but would be worth a shot especially with all the Psych fans no longer having that to watch, kinda has the same fun vibe.
P.s. meant to mention the fact I don’t like the show bones. So if the only ads they did for this show was during that one. You missed a whole completely different type of audience that would of loved this show, but never got the chance to hear of it.
It was good and anded too early 🙁
I love Bones and never heard of this show. I think that is why it didn’t get good ratings. You need to show more previews. Plus changing the time slot on a new show doesn’t work either. Im watching The Finder on Netflix and the show is great.
You should start some of these on NETFLIX to taste the water. When they are successful move to prime time. Reverse what your current thinking is.
The reason good shows like this get canceled is because the morons at FOX run a show for the 20 to 49 year demographic on Friday nights when that age group is usually going out on the town. Then sit around a large conference table and wonder why they have no viewers. Same thing happened with the show Lie To Me. I bet the numbers for Bones have fallen since they moved it to Thursdays too. If you want viewers from this age group try Monday through Wednesday 7 to 9 PM. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.
Amen brother. Really disappointed in the end of Lie to Me. I think they were going to run out of material in a season or two but they should have tried.
I’ve actually don’t have cable/satellite and barely get broadcast. I found The Finder recently because I binge watch a tv series on Netlix if the description looks interesting. I’ve never really gotten into Bones. It’s on my list, but this looked more interesting and even Psyche-like so I checked it out. Saddened to hear it’s cancelled. You had a die-hard fan.
I absolutely loved this show! If it was not successful, it was because of the idiots who decided when and where to air it. I can’t believe that someone somewhere doesn’t have sense enough to try it again. Please!
Should make it into a netflix only series
Found this series on Netflix. Intriguing, funny, Definately FL type crazed. Refreshingly inappropriate with frequent paradoxical scenes. The Last Meal was my favorite. Deff binge worthy. Please bring it back. Though Clarke will be irreplaceable.
I agree to was not marketed enough. Ive been watching it on netflix and my wife and I love it. So sad good tv shows like this are far and few.
