While it’s looking less and less likely that the CW will renew The Game sitcom for a fourth year, series creator Mara Brock Akil is apparently interesting in changing the show in order to score a renewal. Is it a winning strategy?
The Game is a spin-off of the Girlfriends, the once successful sitcom that ended abruptly last season. Premiering in 2006, The Game revolves around Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry), a first year medical student who gives up her school plans to follow her professional football playing boyfriend Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall). Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson.
In its first season, The Game averaged 2.3 million viewers each week. For season two, the ratings dropped to 2.07 million and a .96 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This season, CW execs have stranded the series in a little-watched Friday night timeslot. It’s fallen to an average of 1.68 million viewers and a tiny 0.7 rating in the demo.
Along with fellow sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, The Game hasn’t exactly been a ratings powerhouse. It looks very likely that Chris will be cancelled in May but will have 88 episodes, enough for a syndication run that’s scheduled to start on Nick at Nite this Fall. In contrast, The Game will only have 64 episodes.
A renewal for The Game would create a programming conundrum for the CW. With no other half-hour programs in development, they’d have an orphan half-hour in their timeslot to fill.

The Hollywood Reporter says that one possible solution would be to turn The Game into an hour-long dramedy. The change wouldn’t be a big stretch since the sitcom doesn’t use a studio audience and already mixes comedy with drama. Akil is expected to pitch the idea to the network sometime this week.
The plan is considered a longshot at best considering The Game’s weak ratings and the fact that it doesn’t mesh well with the network’s upcoming slate of dramas. Switching time formats could also cause a problem in syndication, unless each of the hour episodes could be cut into two 30 minute installments.
If the CW network ultimately passes on renewing The Game, the show could still continue. In February, the BET cable channel signed a syndication deal to air the first three seasons. At the time, Barbara Zaneri, BET’s Executive VP of Acquisitions, told Variety, “This [show] is something I went after the minute I got to BET. Not only does it have really fresh African-American stars, but it has a great lineup of guest stars. People like Robin Givens and Vivica Fox — these are people who are regularly on our network.”
It’s been reported (and Mowry recently confirmed) that BET execs have discussed with CBS the possibility of funding a fourth year. The deal would likely entail some cost-cutting to make the deal affordable for the cable channel but it’s in CBS’ best interests to make it work.
Will the show get some “extra innings” or is The Game over? We’ll likely have to wait until May 21st to find out for sure.

I Love this show I haveDirect TV and Don’t get CW so I have to watch what I can on BET which Leaves me really behind. But I loe this show and Hope that they continue it!
I saw 1/2 an episode one afternoon and had to find the name of the show. I’ve been hooked ever since.
I love it, love it, love it!
I’ve probably seen every episode alteast twice if not three times. . . and still watch it.
Please bring the game back. I think the problem was nobody knew about it. It needed previews or something. It was a total fluke that I saw the show because I’d never heard anything about it.
But again LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT.
BRING THE GAME BACK…THE FOLLOWING IS TOO BIG AND FAN BASE TOO LARGE NOT TO CONTINUE THE SHOW. WHOEVER MADE THE CANCELLATION DECISION SHOULD BE FIRED!! POOR DECISION.
I feel as though The Game is a fantastic sitcom and I don’t even know why they would take such a popular show off the air and on top of that not even give it a another season or a finale episode I would love to see more the connections the characters have with each other is so strong and caring and i feel they shouldn’t change the characters everyone have come to the love each actor and actress and the character they play there has been so many questions that haven’t been answered hopefully the fans will finally hear… Read more »
OH yeah I forgot to mention. The reason the ratings dropped is probably because the Viewers never really Knew what time and days the shows were playing. I was confused, therefore I missed the showtimes. I love Derwin Davis he is sssssooooo fine.
I love the Game so much. It is my favorite show in the whole wide world. I love the drama, I love the cast members especially Tia mowry and Wendy , They are some of the best actresses that I have seen to date. I would really love for the show to continue on. And I would also love to buy all the seasons on dvd. Oh yeah and I love the fine men. Bottom line the Game rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game is the best show I ever watched – its funny and the drama is real – so many people can relate to the characters. I would love to see another season as would the rest of my family.
I know Im late to “THE GAME”. I popped the dvd in at work, and could not stop watching it. Not only was I addicted, but my clientele was as well.
I love the TV show the Game. My 2 year old can identify the characters and she like Derwin and Tasha Mack. This sitcom is the closest to real life writing. You give shows that are not half as good a 6 year roll, bring The Game back.
I love this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t beleive it didn’t have good viewership, but the Friday night time slot was an insult to the fans of the show. It’s as if the network wanted to see it die off slowly. That has to be one of the worst time slots, especially for a show like this! I was ecstatic to hear that it would return for a 4th season! If CW is not smart enough, open enough or does nto care enough for the demographics of a show like this, then I hope BET picks it up. I would be happy… Read more »
