To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I can’t believe it. This was such a funny, well written show. This was my husbands and my favorite show. We were so surprised to see something unique and truly entertaining. Cable needs to grab this one up quick.
I’m bummed this show wont be back 🙁
Goddamnit, this makes me mad. I watch very little network TV but this was a refreshing exception and I always looked forward to watching it. Hanks & Whitford made a great team and they had a great supporting cast. I really think Det. Dan Stark should bust some Fox punks who were responsible for cancelling this great show. If they can’t come back on cable, one can hope they do a feature film together. I know it would be hilarious.
There is Sooo much stuff on TV Detroit 187 CSI Hellcats The Big Bang Theory I just didnt have room to record it.
It was funny 1st season if a bit Tom Hanks Drag-netty.
Those two actors will go far!
This was a great show for the over 40 crowd. It was silly and funny in all the right places. I so looked forward to my Friday night with the show. The Chemistry between Whitford and Hanks was great. It was truly enjoyable and I am upset that it was canceled. We have way to many reality shows that are over the top and then some. You get a good down to earth comedy like Good Guys and the powers that be in the movie/TV industry say if it’s not in the younger hip demographic then can it. Booooo! Shame… Read more »
This was my favorite show on TV. Hard to belive it was cancelled. Perhaps a better time slot –or more promotion. Or cancel the executive that cancelled it!
I loved this show and was worried that Fox would cancel it from the start. They seem to enjoy canceling any show that’s worth watching on their network. The only shows left worth anything are Rasing Hope and Human Target. House and Bones used to be really good but they’re starting to go down hill. The way Fox is I figure Human Target is gone after this run and then Rasing Hope will be out soon after.
I’m ready to give up on Fox altogether.
Total crap that this show isn’t coming back. But the brain trusts at Fox, who cancelled Family Guy twice are at it again. The biggest mistake was moving a show that is meant for the 18-49 male audience to Friday night at 8, (Central) what a stupid time for a young male targeted show! i’m planning on going out to get drunk at that time! This show caused me to rearrange my whole friday schedule so I could never miss it, to the point it was pissing off my friends. I wouldn’t have done that for any other show on… Read more »
WHAT THE HELL!!! Why? I just dont understand we got a show
that isnt a frickin REALITY show that is funny and fun to watch and
they cancel it? They need to go to cable and try it there. This was
so much fun to watch. I looked forward to it every week. SAD! VERY
SAD
Very sad !!! One of the best shows on TV. Who makes these
decisions ? Everyone I know watched the show and loved it
!
Absolutely hysterical show. My friends I told about it
loved it. However, it didn’t get much publicity, so hardly anyone
knew about it. It was one of the few new shows that was really
enjoyable. Somebody needs to bring The Good Guys back. It has
incredible potential to develop into a real cult classic. Anyone in
Hollywood listening?
It is a shame they canceled it when there are some really dumb shows on TV and it was something different! I hope they both come back with another good show and NOT on FOX!
Loved The Good Guys! Best new show on television! Hopefully USA will have the smarts to pick it up! Much better than Covert Affairs or some of the other new cable shows, ie the horrible Risolli & Isles! Should have known Fox would cancel it. It was too well acted and written. They rather show repeats of the absolutely boring Lie to Me….ick!
What? The Good Guys are done? This was one of those shows that I truly enjoyed! Never missed an episode. Who is in charge over at Fox anyway? I’ll really miss the giggles and belly laughs this show offered.
I’m so upset that this show isn’t coming back. Seriously depressed over it. Gonna have to buy all the episodes off itunes before they take them off. WHY when horrible shows like American Idol can stay on forever do they take away good writing and humor.
