To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I am DEVASTATED about the cancellation!!! Finally, a show came around that was funny and irreverent and lovely and it gets canceled… What a freaking surprise!
I am SOOOOO fraking tired of reality shows, I could scream! Nobody knows good quality entertainment when they see it!! FOX, you’ve SCREWED me again…
my spouse and me loved this show every friday. we looked for it every friday night. my grandkids loved it. both of them watch it. they are 7 and 4 they laugh the whole time. i play tape shows for them all the time. it was the most laugherest i had all week. i cant believe its not on any more. i loved both guys onn it. please bring it back. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
I am sad to find out the show will not be renewed for next season. Alot of the scenes were filmed right outside my apartment window which made it even more exciting to see the finished product on the finale show. I too would record the show when viewing it wasn’t possible. What type of show does it take for FOX to consider it “good enough” to renew? I loved the characters and the way they would all relate to one another. Sorry FOX you made a mistake this time. Again.
Very disappointed… it was a very food show..watched very episode.. what does it take apparently 4.9mil is not enough. Cut the crap and have to show..
I am angry about the show being cancelled myself too. I mean, it didn’t have a very good time slot to begin with so how can anyone expect it to be take off. I personally love the show and would like to see it aired again. Hanks and Whitford are the s*** and make great partners. BRING THE SHOW BACK, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD…………………..
What a disappointment. Dan Stark was one of the most entertaining characters on TV, and Hanks’ character balanced perfectly with him. We never made it through an episode without having to rewind, because we always missed something while laughing. Excellent writing, fine acting, and some of the funniest bad guys ever. I’m so sick of all of the boring cop shows–this one was unique.
We loved Good Guys… Shame on Fox for not giving it more time. I know lots of people who also enjoyed this show. Dan Stark is a funny, funny character!! And Colin Hanks was great. Good cast, funny show and great scenes of Dallas. What’s the matter with Fox?? Good tv is so hard to come by these days. What are they going to replace it with….more reality shows??? Please Fox, reconsider….
Throughout my long career as a TV viewer, I have been consistantly disappointed by the never-ending parade of dropped shows. They were, of course, always the best shows. Apparently, I am not a typical “network viewer” because I love the off-beat, the quirky, the well-written, compellingly acted little works of art that the average schmuck apparently doesn’t ‘get’. “The Good Guys” was a delightful little break from reality and my husband and I were in love with those characters. We will miss them. Thank goodness that “Lie to Me” is hanging in there (it clearly has its own brand of… Read more »
My household loves this show. I truly hope it gets picked up elsewhere.
We live in Dallas and will miss this. It was one of the only shows
we watched on Fox.
I really enjoyed that show, I used to make sure that if I didnt see it that I at least recoded it so that I could go back and watch the really good adventure that I loved to see every week. I think fox should really be ashamed of themselves because that show had a good cast and I loved seeing the chemistry of it. I wish some channel would find it and pick it up.
The only people not surprised are the ones who never watched it. The show has supplanted almost all others as far as I’m concerned, and it’s not quirky it’s hilarious.
Unbelievable……Fox….. U are lame!!!!
I like the show and hope that someone will pick it up soon.
My husband and I loved the show and we’re very disappointed that it won’t be back. As soon as they moved it to Friday night, we knew it would be over. Shame on Fox.
