To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I love The Good Guys! Awesome show, something me (34) and my dad (60) could watch together.
The Good Guys cancelled!! This was the funniest show to come along in a long time!!!
NO MORE stupid cartoon shows! No more FOX until they bring back the Good Guys.
Love the show, love the actors. Agree with all above. Hard to find easy, lighthearted humor after a stressful day and great actors in this combination. We look to which station will take up the opportunity to add a great show tho their line-up, even if it means dropping a senseless reality show (not a big fan of a few of them, too many). Folks this is a NO-BRAINER after reading some of these posts. Wishing the cast and crew all the Best! Look forward to seeing them again.!
I am highly disappointed…how do they determine who is polled to get the numbers of viewers? Everyone I know loved the show- if we were not home, then good old DVR was wonderful to never miss an episode… Thumbs down to FOX for taking the fun away…A & E will get my vote for programs this new season!
LOVED the Good Guys and so sorry it’s cancelled. Very funny and entertaining but with interesting plots – a very clever show.
Loved this show. Can’t believer FoX cancelled. I don’t watch the reality shows because you don’t have to have any damn brains to make them. The Good Guys was funny, quirky and well written.
We are very disappointed! We really loved watching this show and I can’t remember a shoe that made me laugh so hard that I needed kleenex because I was crying so hard.
I too am disappointed that the show has been cancelled. The Good Guys was a unique and very entertaining show; Fox should rethink this one.
What are you thinking? Oh, that’s right, you aren’t thinking. This was a show that took talent to write and perform. That would cost some money. It all comes down to money. Take some of the millions that you bring in with your garbage reality shows and throw this show a bone. It’s the only way you’ll get us to watch your network.
I loved the good guys, and what do they put on another stupid cartoon show….
This was a great show-seems they never give the good shows a chance. Much better than reality TV, Fox’s ridiculus cartoons like simpsons, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, etc.
Bring it back!!!!!!!!
The Good Guys was a funny, quirky show that my husband and I really enjoyed. The time slot wasn’t the best, but that’s what the “record” button is for. Too bad FOX doesn’t see the value in keeping this show–they’ll probably dream up another bad “talent” show in its place. We’re hoping some cable station will look to take the show over if FOX isn’t smart enough to move it to a better timeslot (perhaps 7 p.m.?)
I’m really pissed. It was my favorite show. I’m hoping another network picks it up. I’m very dissappointed in Fox. Actually, I think I’ll stop watching it all together!
Sorry not to see The Good Guys on for 2011….it was a GREAT SHOW. Think you made a mistake by cancelling it!
This was the best new show , PERIOD!!! Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks are awesome. They shouldnt have moved it from monday to friday. And I guess the sheeple like stupid shows like dwts or american idol ,or stupid so-called reality shows. The cast of THE GOOD GUYS ARE GREAT!!! Cancelling this show is in the words of Dan Stark “CRIMEY”!!!!! BRING BACK THIS SHOW FOX!!!! How about THE GOOD GUYS MOVIE!!! I think that would be awesome if FOX doesnt have the brains to keep a cool ,funny show like THE GOOD GUYS ON!!! I guess those of us… Read more »
Burn in Hell is strong, but the rest I will go with…even having more than one channel, I was true to THE GOOD GUYS because they would “Bust Some Punks” every week and it was great to see how the 80’s and today mesh…for someone 40 something, it was a great show that will be sadly missed… Whenre’s Tom (Hanks) when you need him?
