To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I am really mad and upset they cancelled a good program and kept crap on like all those reality shows that are so far from reality , it’s pathetic …I think cancelling some of the producers and network admins. contracts and employment would be better…
this rots i love this show
Ooooohh, I am soooo sad! I cannot believe that this awesome show has been canceled! Dan Starks is one of a kind, and we quote him in our daily lives all the time!!! He makes me giggle, he makes us laugh, he is a MAN!!! Hee–please don’t leave us Dan!!
And Jacko–you are a great partner and you tolerate Dan the Man with finesse. Please don’t go…
very stupid of them
this is the best show out in the past few years
I loved the show and thought it was hysterical. Moving it to cable is a great idea. I really hope someone picks it up for a second season.
I am so disappointed that FOX canceled Good Guys…I LOVED this show! It was quirky, smart and fresh…I guess it was just too different from reality tv…can’t get enough of those dance/talent shows and race/competition shows…good grief!
I need something like the Good Guys in my life.
Looked forward each week to it.
Bring it back.
Ann
I really thought the show was a hit! At least everyone I talked to about it loved it!!! But most of us don’t tune in on the TV. I watched it online, as did my friends. And several of my family members taped the show. I hope someone else picks it up. It would be a shame to have to say goodbye to such a dynamic duo!
This is such a shame – I REALLY loved this show. I bet it would have done well on USA. It’s a shame when 3 1/2 million people aren’t enough to keep a great show on the air.
Really enjoyed the show. Loved the premise. Waited for it each week. Cannot believe they have cancelled this show. Fox is my favorite network but I believe they really have made a mistake here. Please rethink this and give us back some humor in our lives.
Sorry Fox, you ‘ve made a mistake. Let’s go USA or TNT snag this show, it’s a keeper..I watch more cable shows than network anyway. Network TV has consistently shown that they don’t think much of their viewers intelligence.
this is ****** bull **** **** you fox you just made a big mistake
Loved the show. Please bring it back — somewhere, anywhere…
CRAZY! Move it to a different night and you will get the viewers! Love this show! Please reconsider a second season!
LOVED THE SHOW… My GUT Feeling is that FOX made a mistake. Someone Please Pick Up this Show!!!!!!!!
