To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Good Guys was our favorite show; it constituted 33% of our weekly TV viewing. We will be in mourning.
I think the show would be great in the same venue as Psych or Monk. Both of those are also quirky, different and comedic based crime shows. we loved it
This was the first T.V. that ever got my attention enough to watch every episode, I found it hilarious, now I find out its been canceled.
Best new show in years
What a shame. I only found out about the show mid October and watched every week. I was looking foward to another season. I liked the chemistry between the leads as well as the writing. I hope it’s available in a boxed set so I can see what I missed.
My wife and I really like the show. Of course we do not count as we are both over 49.
Damn,a funny, funny, entertaining show bites the dust.A better time slot would have been nice. It had as much chance as a big-eared guy in DC has next time around.
Amazing, that a show that actually requires some attention, has excellent writing and interesting story lines would get cancelled in the world of “Jersey Shores”, “The Bachelor”, ad nauseum. People are either just too stupid anymore to actually watch and have some involvement in a show or it just cost too much to shoot where “reality” shows require little of anything to produce. Now that “Fringe” is moving to Fridays it will also be cancelled by summer. I don’t like watching Fox anyway and except for “Fringe” and “Bones” don’t watch anything else but football. I just don’t like contributing… Read more »
My husband and I are crushed! We looked forward impatiently all week to each show. It was a real gem in the sea of dross reality shows that drone on mindlessly. The entire cast was brilliant, and it was such a fresh take on the cop show. How could you not laugh from the opening credits (1-2-3-4) right through to the previous of the next show.We will miss Bradley and Colin, and hope to see them together again in another vehicle soon. The only thing we can do is wait impatiently for the show to be available on DVD so… Read more »
Nielson Ratings never talked me or my many friends who watched the series each week! We could hardly wait to see the next one. We even taped the whole series to show to others who didn’t get to watch and to watch again ourselves. We are very disappointed about the cancelation!
What a bummer, so many good shows gone this year, (The Good Guys, SGU, Caprica ect)
I think the ratings system (nielson) is way outdated and the networks don’t have a clue how to market to a modern tech savvy audience. How many more great shows will be canceled before the networks learn how the modern viewing audience works?
I have to say, I am very disappointed. My whole family looked forward to watching evey week. Anyone who didn’t find this show entertaining is a moron. In a time where every other show is a “reality show” and they seem to get renewed season after season, it leaves very little good entertainment for those who care nothing about watching some ignorant, immoral families who want to have their private lives displayed in front of the whole world. Yeah, that’s entertainment. Fox, please reconsider giving ‘The Good Guys’ another shot. A little hijynx is way better than a lot of… Read more »
This was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a looong time. Fox is stupid for cancelling it. I guess all people want anymore is smut. I will truly miss this show, my husband and I looked forward to watching every week.
Another good show bites the dust! I truly enjoyed this off beat cop show. 🙁
I have gotten all kinds of friends to watch this show. Since the time slot sucks so much, I mainly watched it on Hulu. Fox finally get’s a show that makes watching tv fun again and just like that it is gone. I am so tired of shows like CSI, S$# my dad says and reality tv shows. I know they rate well but they are so piss poor.
Please FX pick this show up.
