To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

My husband and I loved the show. The slot was awful. I wish cable had grabbed it up. It
is far better than many of the cable shows. It was a show you could watch and have a good laugh and still get the point. One of the few both my husband and I liked. We aren’t in the
18-48 age group. Both of us are over 60. Too bad those two guys were great together and the women on the show were believable.
I am 62 years old and have been watching tv since I was very very young. So therefore I think I know a good show when I see it and the “Good Guys” is One..Tell me who wouldn’t have laugh their butt off when Dan Starks tazer gun went crazy. That was so funny. I’m telling you CEO’s out there keep this show..Remember “Touched by an Angel “they tryed to take it off too people protested they put it back on and wa-la it was on for years. And HELLO!! there are other age groups besides 18-49 They are’nt the… Read more »
Now that just sucks. I loved the Good Guys. Now what realiaty show will they force on us. This stinks.
Excellent show. Don’t know why they are cancelling it.
USA or another basic cable channel should pick up the show. It is the best buddy cop show ever! The only way I can describe the vibe of the show is like it’s a combination of two classic shows: Barney Miller and Magnum P.I. – but with some extra zaniness! Any channel that picks it up will have a winner.
I couldn’t agree more. If I am surfing channels and i see Barney Miller is on I take time
to watch as much of it as I can. This would be a classic too if someone who really knew what people like had put it in a better slot. I am sick of reality shows…..this was great!
Most shows I like only go one season.
Get me a Nelson Box. If I watch, they can cancel.
My mom and I both loved this show. This show in fact was almost the only show we watched on Fox (besides football). Bring it back!
Great show. People are stupid.
Boo to FOX. We were waiting for the second season of the Good Guys and just learned it was going to happen. We so looked forward to Friday nights because of the Good Guys. Bring it back!
I love the Good Guy Show
Of course they did…..but lets keep minute to win and all the other garbage…….
this is crap take a good show off the air and leave all the crap you have on. this should go to USA network or FX would be a huge hit there
I really looked forward to watching The Good Guys each week. The show was entertaining, hilarious, action packed and heart warming, a great escape from everyday life. Each character added so much to this show which made it such a gem. Please reconsider cancelling The Good Guys, possibly giving it another time slot during the week. I truly believe this show is worth a second chance!
Ok, that just sucks!! We loved this show!!! Somebody get cracking on a face book site to get it on fx or somewhere it could be appreciated!!
You mean that’s it? My fiance and I made Friday night date night with The Good Guys, a funny and intelligent show. We loved the two leads and the whole design of the show. I was just about to see if it was on tonight, then I read it was canceled. How disappointing. I don’t watch stupid TV shows, just good ones. Fox, bring it back, and maybe I’ll check out your channel again.
