To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Great music, awesome cars. good actors and writers. I guess that spells doom. Loved this show. I guess it wasnt animated. I wonder about Fox they used to be the network I had to watch now I just tune it out.
I loved the show and my daughter did too. I’m very disappointed. Surely a cable network could pick it up. Put it on USA and I bet they’ll have more viewers. Good grief, people watch police women of …. (well I do) they’ll love The Good Guys.
What a shame. I loved that show and looked forward to it each week. It was always in the worse time slots. CW won’t pick it up either?
Just found out this show has been cancelled. What a shame. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Any chance it will be brought back?
The show was awesome…you know you get some great writers and chemistry between actors and you should just keep plugging away! Try putting it in a decent slot or advertise or maybe you just want to switch the channel and watch some crap about a family of busty chicks who have way to much time on their hands.
Come on Guys…get off the network couch and give these guys a new time slot!
We love them! Some great acting and some amazing writers…will so much for Fox.
What a shame….we loved the show. It was a highlight of our week. Any chance they might bring it back?
What a shame! It was one of the highlights of our week – watching The Good Guys.
A funny show with great acting, of course it would be cancelled – we’re retired, so we don’t count any more, but we still spend a lot of money….
Bring it BACK!!!!
I was so shocked to hear this show was cancelled. My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Can’t understand why this was cancelled and some other less quality shows are still on.
Smart and funny – well-written and acted. CBS did not give a good show a chance, as usual. Stick it on Friday when the 18-45 demographic (as it is held high and called) does not watch the tv and let it die there. Glad I did not miss one episode, as I would have had it been on the elite “cable channels” because this old lady (60ish-oh excuse me) would not have seen the best comedy this network has had on for years.
Meant to say Fox, not CBS, but the references about network television apply there, as well.
This was a great show. Of course it was canceled – smart, referential and well-done shows are just not as welcome on network TV anymore.
This is a nice show. I’m really going to miss it to…I want to hear: “Let’s go and bust some punks” once again!
I am so sad this show was canceled. Maybe if it didn’t have a terrible time slot it would have sucked in viewers. The Good Guys was hilarious, smart, quirky, and just kickass! Very disappointed with Fox. 🙁 I was so excited for the second season.
Are you serious? The Good Guys are gone? I wasn’t always home to watch it live so I recorded it. Guess I don’t count as a viewer then, do I? It was fun to see Bradley Whitford do comedy, especially after the West Wing. He is hilarious! I loved the episodes with Gary Cole! And Julius, the CI was a great character as well. Just thinking about this show makes me laugh. I don’t watch any “reality” tv shows because I live reality! When I watch TV, I like to be entertained, not look at a bunch of people searching… Read more »
