To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

It is sad that when you finally get a show that has a good story line that you could build on, believable characters, really funny, and old school charm they cancel it. I guess people today can not think that deep and would rather dummy up to some of the brainless reality shows or class-less animated shows filling the air waves these days. No wonder why America is in the condition it is in these days. We are better than that and the Good Guys was a great way to prove it. Keep the show!!! At least they made sense.
PLEASE don’t cancel it, my son and I loved it. It was not your typical run of the mill show. I totally agree with Charlotte_GTE, get rid of the Reality TV crap.
I really enjoyed this show; loved Dan the Man! I never missed it and the music rocked! The powers that be at FOX must be mind-numbed to the CRAP that passes for entertainment these days. PLEASE, PLEASE give The Good Guys another chance on a different night.
My Family loved the show and we are very dissapointed FOX decided to pull the plug instead of trying a new time slot. TBS should pick it up; it would be great on their line up.
Dallas was a great back ground too. Come on guys try again!
No kidding. Friday night is like Fox’s death slot. If they really wanted to give the show a chance they should have kept it on a week day. Like the show or not, who stays home to watch tv?
It’s concerning that Fringe is also going to the Friday slot this month.
Damn, I liked this show. The Friday night time slot sucked, but we always DVRd it and watched every episode. Nothing survives on Friday. Numbers, Miami Medical, and now The Good Guys. Come on Fox, move it to a different night instead of cancelling.
Yes, I’m very disappointed. I looked forward to this show week after week. The story line, cast and acting is superb. Downer news.
Absolutely LOVED this show!!! My husband and I are sooooo disappointed. we finally had something that wasn’t “Reality Warped” and just good humor and now it’s gone. BRING IT BACK!!!!!
it was nice to have a great laugh n a world that seem to has gotten so serious
Fox should not cancel this hilarious show. My husband and I watch faithfully, when we are not out on Friday nights. Most people go out for dinner on Friday after work. Keep this show and cancel some of those silly offensive cartoons and reality shows. I guess only educated upper middle class enjoy well written scripts.
Loved this show. Watched it faithfully. It’s too bad they didn’t try a different time slot. Friday nights are tough. Brad Whitford was hilarious! Had no idea that he could capture such a funny complex character so amazingly! Loved the flashbacks. I really don’t think the network gave it a chance.
I LOVED this show. I looked forward to watching this every week…..I enjoyed the part Bradley Whitford played…..I enjoy a program that is entertaining….but also has a story line to go with it….I wish it would be picked up by another network…..
Dang! We loved this show! Bring it back, it was our favorite…………….boohoo 🙁
IAM P***ED OFF!!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW. SCREW ALL THAT REALITY TV CRAP THIS WAS A REAL GOOD SHOW, IT WAS ONE THE WHOLE FAMILY COULD WATCH, HARDLY ANYONE WATCHES IT WHEN SHOWS ARE ON PEOPLE NOWA DAYS RECORD, IDIOTS. I WOULD LIKE TO PERSONALLY TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THIS BUT EVERYTIME I TRY THEY DONT ANSWER OR RESPOND. IM SORRRY EVERYONE AT FOX TURNED INTO SUCH A BIG WOOSE, THATS IT, CASE CLOSED YOUR HONOR
