To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Wow I can’t believe it-we loved this show. I was just checking tonight to see what time it would be on, and find this article. Typical Fox. Sux.
i can’t believe fox cancelled this show it was the only show on tv that had real humor, character, it had balls. fox again has disappointed the free thinking adult viewer
I will greatly miss The Good Guys on Fox. It was very funny and I looked forward to it each week. It was different and I found it very enjoyable. I really liked the whole cast as well. I wish it could come back to cable and find a home somewhere like FX.
this show was so solid and fun, i’ve always love bradley and colin and having the two of them together was so cool, hilarious chemistry, you can’t put a show that’s building an audience on a friday, it has no chance, stupid networks, the first few episodes while fun were definitely a bit slow, felt like the show didn’t know what kid of show it wanted to be yet, but it really began to hit it’s stride and was flowing so nicely, i am without a doubt, so very bummed about it’s cancellation.
I can’t believe they cancelled my Good Guys! This was the best show since Monk. My whole family loved this show and It was Perfect on Monday nights it was hard to catch it on Fridays but we made the effort and now its over. So sad Fox actually had something going.
I knew this show would be cancelled because it is well written, well acted and truly funny!!! I am SO sick of quality shows being axed. I refuse to watch the “reality” crap that is foisted upon us with talentless and mindless dimwits invading our livingrooms.
I truly looked forward to watching The Good Guys
This show was down right halarious. The cast was great, the directing was funominal ,and the comedy filled our house with laghter. It brought my family together. The cancellation of this show is very disapointing. I loved it:(
How disappointing. Great writing and character development. I caught it at midseason and was hooked. I agree that cable would have been a better market for the show.
Shame on FOX 4 cancelling this wonderful show. Always about the $$$$, not necessarily the humor value of the series…..
I love this show!!! This show was hilarious!! I’m so tired of good shows being canceled while absolute crap has survived. Give this show a second chance on a different night or maybe cable could pick it up. I’m not going to watch anymore new shows until they are okayed for a second season!!!!!! Why watch new shows only to be disappointed time and time again!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS SHOW WAS CANCELLED. IT WAS HILARIOUS! MY DAUGHTER AND I LOVED ALL THE CHARACTERS. MAYBE FOX SHOULD HAVE TRIED A LITTLE HARDER WITH THE DIFFERENT TIME SLOTS. WELL, WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS THERE’S ALWAYS CABLE. HELLO?? USA, TNT, TBS?
What a great disappointment! The humor was great. The interactions fantastic. In a world were Reno 911 survived so long, how could this much better program fail?
I liked the show. It could have been modified some to improve ratings. Dan could have been toned down without disturbing the character. There’s really nothing on network television anymore. It’s very depressing. Those reality things are absolutely awful except for perhaps Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. The rest are disgusting.
I think the Good Guys should return for a second season, I love the show, it was hilariuos, happy, cheerful, & action packed, it was one of the best cop shows in years, better than starskey & hutch, magnum pi, and miami vice put together, it was an awsome show and should have a lot of time left, please dont cancel my show.
The humor was awesome BRING IT BACK
I think they should bring Good Guys back for a second season. We loved the show and thought it was true entertainment. How can you take this off the air while other networks are airing garbage such as jersey shore, real housewives, and all the other realty bull crap. I say give us middle agers something to be interested in and keep Good Guys on the air.
It was actually funny and the only show worth watching on friday nights. I agree, please bring it back!
