To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I hate to see this show go. What a pairing – I would have never thought of putting Bradley Whitford with Colin Hanks together but they were perfect as a team. Really funny. Too bad.
I loved this show and its a shame it got canceled. It’s one of the two shows I watch on FOX.
Nobody asked me!! My wife and I never missed the show! Even if it was a bit corny, it was very entertaining. I guess it’s true that the “Good Guys” finish last. They will be sorely missed!
This was a great show and my wife , friends and I throughly enjoyed it. I think it would be a trajedy to cancel this show for good. It was hilarious.
The Good Guys was my husband’s favorite TV show. He asked me to look up when it would next be on. Now I have to give him the bad news, that another good show has been cancelled! It’s too bad…
I am so sad to see this show go. It was the best funny cop show out there. I mean, we like CSI, but this was just fun!! It was quirky and kinda reminded me of Monk in a way. I agree with another poster that said it would be a perfect fit for USA. Let’s hope that they pick up the show. I don’t want to see it go.
We watch alot of TV and most network TV is so boring. This was one that compared with USA and one of the few “network” shows we never missed. Hope they do sell it to cable – it will do great.
We cannot believe this show has been cancelled, we looked so forward to it . There is hardly anything good on TV anymore. These guys work so well together and are really funny. Please please don’t cancel.
I am so upset that this was cancelled. This was the ONLY Show my mother and I looked forward to watching on Friday nights. Horrible time slot? Whatever. This was a great show and it should NOT be cancelled after one season. We don’t have cable, we have over the air, can they even register our viewing with that? If not, then they’re missing out on a lot of people who love the show. It’s a great show. This is just depressing. Screw TV. period.
Bring it back. Or get it on cable. It would be a good fit on USA.
Everyone in my family looked forward to watching this show. The Good Guys was great fun, with an excellent cast. We can only hope that a cable station will pick it up. Enough of the dumbing down of the American audience with reality show drivel.
I can’t believe it was cancelled. So many nights, we looked forward to seeing Good Guys and had so many laughs. The reality stuff is terrible. This was wonderful, quirky, and funny.
Loved the Good Guys and all the characters…well written and great actors for regular tv…Miss you guys and gals.Saddened Good Guys fan.
That was the best show I’ve seen in so long! I couldn’t believe Whitford could be so funny! And Hanks rocked! I kinda liked him better than his dad. I think the ratings dropped so bad because they put it on Friday. Thats a horrible day for tv. Don’t let this show die please fox.
Loved the show. Too bad, they will probably have another talent show or cooking show. There aren’t enough of those. Sheesh.
