To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

The show was great! I looked forward to the humor – Bradley Whitford’s character was just such a redneck – much different than the West Wing Josh for sure. And Colin Hanks has a terrific talent – I hope he does another TV series soon.
I agree with the comment in the article – the show would have done better on cable – a station like USA would have probably done better.
The good guys was the best show on television. I downloaded the whole first season still can’t get enough. please bring it back, please.
That sucks, I loved the Good Guys! I’m disappointed.
Please, reconsider your decision to cancel THE GOOD GUYS. My husband and I aren’t in the demographic that you target, 18 to 49?, we are older, but we sure enjoyed watching this show. I have a ques. for all execs at every level in TV….why the heck do you take off good shows, and keep some of the really stupid reality shows? What sense does that make? No sense at all to us!! I think you have missed the boat on this one, BIG TIME!!! We are only two people, but we are very dissappointed in this decision…..again…Regards…..
C’mon FOX! Give to us, at least, SEASON TWO!!! I think this will be very appreciated by most of fans that hope for a new epsode!
Don’t kill tv shows with something good, we’ve to stand for Glee (a.k.a the worse tv show ever, IMO) don’t miss a good goal!
i live in the uk and wish that the good guys was picked up for a second series.. i think its one of the best shows to come out of the states since californication started. its a shame that all the good programs get cancelled while rubbish continues to bombard the channels of england with no sign of ending, like greys anatomy and survivor… i know this will not change anything and the channels and production companies spend lots of moneyon trying to entertain the masses but bloody hell i cant believe the people acctually watch wet crap like that!
to add to my own comment. ive just been reading through the comments and this is the only show that has been cancelled that has NOT been slated. usually there are a few haters who come onto these forums and argue that the channel was correct in ending the show.. please read through the previous comments and you will find that almost evry person who watched the show LOVED IT!! Fox Fux up big time!!
That show was great! It had a bad time slot, and friday night everybody is out having fun, so who is going to be home to watch it??
it is so very sad in a time in America where every citizen needs a good laugh when all we see around us is messed up politicians and bad economic times. The good Guys was one hour of funny , cheesy, laugh out loud humor that could make you forget about all the BS crap we have to deal with everyday. Fox would be wise to re-examine the show and maybe put it in a time slot and promote it more that would help bolster its viewership. TV viewers as myself love having something to watch other than another wind… Read more »
OMG!!! My Husband and I loved this show! Please bring it back! It made us laugh when there wasn’t much to laugh at last year. Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford were awesome together and deserve another season, but they need to be on during the week and not on a Friday evening when people are out. That timeslot was a setup to fail all by itself.
I wish the show had not been cancelled. Definitely thought that with the quality of the actors the show could have improved over time had the network seen fit to give it a real chance to develop. Too bad. I was looking forward to season two!!!!
SEASON TWO PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
That sucks, that was a good show compared to the junk they leave TV.
BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!
It was a wonderful program. I just don’t understand why the good ones have to leave and the crap gets to stay on. The two detectives worked well together. I loved them, especially Bradley, love that mustache. Please reconsider and bring them back. PLEASE!!!!!
We loved that show. All you can see on TV now is blood and guts, gays kissing and everyone sleeping with everyone. What is on TV now is awful. Reality shows should have died a long time ago. This was a great tv show for the whole family. PLEASE BRING IT BACK.

A truly enjoyable TV show with engaging characters and a genuine sense of fun, which seems to be largely missing on Friday night broadcasts. Why would they cancel The Good Guys and keep so many dreary programs?
Why , why, why. ? Best show on network Tv. But the same old story, crappy time slots, no pub and summer replacement stigma doomed it from the beginning. Maybe some campaigning from true fans can bring it back!!!
