To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Why???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does good series keep being cancelled? I just don’t get it… Makes remember of another goodie that was cancelled: “Huff”.
It’s truly a shame…
Bring back the good guys. It was one of the funniest shows on tv. Dan Stark was hilarious!!! One of the best shows on tv.
im pissed…. the good guys was an amazing show!!!
This series was one of the few reasons I would turn the tv on. After a long day of tedious police investigations, it was the break I needed. It gave me a chance to laugh and unwind and to relate to some of the zany antics that goes on between fellow officers.
Please reconsider.
My wife and I were just talking about this show. We are very sorry to sad to read this. Cable networks might work. We would watch! It was a quirky comedy that really was delightfully twisted from the normal junk offered on the networks. Friday’s are the day of death for TV shows! Plus one other thing…I hate the way the season is broken into two parts these days. I am sure some expert consultant thought this is a great idea. It stinks and makes you loose interest in the characters and story lines. Gee you wonder why we stop… Read more »
I absolutely loved the good guys. It was a tremendousky entertaining show. And matt nix created another big hit when it came to this show. It pisses me off that it is cancelled. Fox did this to themselves. They did absolutely nothing to promote this show. I didnt even know it existed until me and one of my buddys and i came across it on hulu.com. We were all instantly hooked. If fox actually tried to get viewers attracted to this show they could have. But they didnt try. And now were the ones that have to suffer, the loving… Read more »
I’m so disappointed that The Good Guys was cancelled. My husband and I absolutely loved the show. We looked forward to Friday nights. There are so many dumb reality shows on now that it was refreshing to find a show that was actually entertaining. Bradley Whitford was hilarious! I really wish FOX would reconsider bringing back the show. The Good Guys was the only show on FOX we watched except for Raising Hope.
The reliance on ratings is absurd in this day and age of time shifting and alternate access. Too many good shows are squeezed out for schlock. Correction : cheap schlock. I, for one, watch less and less TV because of the wretched content, shaky cam, and dumbed down writing.
This debacle only speeds up the end of broadcast television as a quality medium.
It’s a major bummer!!! The Good Guys was a witty, hilarious show. Bradley Whitford is dynamite and made me laugh constantly. Too many good shows get cancelled for reality shows and stupid franchises like CSI, Law & Order, and NCIS to name a few. I was so looking forward to a new season with the man who just wants to “bust some punks”!!!
Thanks FOX, you always disappoint me.
I’m so disappointed! I loved The Good Guys! My husband I watched every episode.
Bring it back, Fox. I understand that it had poor ratings, but people were just discovering it when it disappeared.
So many viewers are sick of shows full of blood, gore and constant graphic murdering of women. Finally, something with fun and action to watch on Friday nights. Loved the flash back sequences. Great chemistry and humor.
That is too bad that fox canceled the show, we really liked the TV show, it’s a shame , we thought that is was funny, cute and found it refreshing. You would think fox would stick with something that to us, was working, guess it’s back to all the CSI’s.
Wow, I was expecting season 2!!! Until I googled when is season 2 coming out. It’s sad, this was one of the hilights show I watch on Fridays. Really wish they could continue this show. How difficult was it to get the hilarity!!?? It was pretty damn funny to me.
I hate this show was cancelled…..just good fun and very creative……how can we get it back? There are people out here that just want to be entertained and this show did it….I am getting sick of all the reality shows, that aren’t really reality….
P.S. – Almost every show I watch on Friday nights, with the exception of Blue Bloods, seems to have been canceled. Think about it….
This show was great! I can’t imagine that Friday night is prime time for TV. Most people have things to do on Friday. And then FOX never really advertised this show. I blame FOX for letting us down. “The Good Guys” will be missed.
