To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

VERY dissapointed that “The Good Guys” is not going to be returning. I truly was one of our favorite shows and we are going to miss it…..maybe you should reconsider?????
Dang…. wow, I was on the net searching for when the new season starts:( wowz, this sucks:/
THIS SUCKS! The Good Guys was a very AWESOME show and it should NOT be cancelled. It is far better then alot of the crap that is on now days. It was putting TV back to where it should be. PUT IT BACK ON.
My husband and I were eagerly awaiting the second season, such a great show, Brad was awesome! Truly shocked and dismayed show was cancelled.
Fox, WAKE UP! This is a jewel!!
Stupid to cancel an amazing show. It was hilarious and I was really hoping they would have changed their minds by now…
Have been looking for Season 2 of this show. Why must the networks always cater to the lowest common denominator? Don’t answer that for me, I know the answer is $$$$$!
We always DVR’d it, as I’m sure a lot of others did since it was on Friday nights. Does DVR’ing negatively affect the shows ratings?
loved the show. refreshing. super funny. i hope it resurfaces on cable!
I have 2 favorite shows on my facebook profile and you cancelled one! c’mon
We loved the Good Guys and were looking forward to another season. It didn’t get good ratings because of the day and time it was on. Sorry for the cancelation decision.
LOved the show,was really funny
Thank you for canceling an amazing show. Atleast I can purchase season 1 on dvd. Every cop show is csi or law and order, and every one of them are so serious. Too dramatic. C’mon now, this show was funny, and better portrayed the real life of a police officer. Hahaha. Great show. Fox is a bunch of douchebags for canceling it.
Best show I’ve seen in a long time. Bring it back you jackasses and cancel american idol .
This show is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! Why the hell would you want to cancel it if it was so damn good?!!!! Fox, make a season 2 for the fans, including me 🙁
I’m older than the target market, but I loved this show! It was retro, funny, and the characters worked so well together. I looked forward to laughing at their antics and to seeing how Dan was going to solve the cases! So much better than all the reality shows out there. How can we get it back?!
