To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Never missed an episode of season 1. Have been patiently waiting for the new season. I can not believe this show was cancelled. Absolutely, without a doubt, one of the funniest shows on TV.
I am very disappointed in the cancellation of The Good Guys. This was a delightful, quirky show that I’m sure would be put in the same classification as Gilligan’s Island. Not everything made senses but it wasn’t suppose to. You just had to go with it. This is the type of show I like to watch. I don’t watch hard dramas or reality shows. I like intelligent shows without graphic violence and light hearted shows like this. Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer shows of this type on television which is one of the reasons I am watching more and… Read more »
This show was hilarious! I was very disappointed to learn about its cancellation.
I think the rating system does not work as well as it used to be due to several advancements in tv technology like the dvr and on-demand. I really dont watch anymore shows on their original showtimes, I watch it when I can. So I dont think the ratings clearly reflect the success of a show.
I really wish they would reconsider this. I havent enjoyed a good comedy series in a while.
somebody please make a season two seriously i just finished watching season one on netflix it was awesome!!!! its one of those shows with a perfect formula sort of the same quirky ness every week but it doesnt get old seriously seaason two please!
I am sorry to hear the Good Guys has been cancelled. I thought it was fun but I fear the thin-skinned Dallasites weren’t amused. Oh well. I know the cast can feel proud of their performances. I will miss them all but will keep an eye out for them in other venues. God Bless and Don’t Let the ******** Get You Down. : )
this show was great. i cant believe it got canceled after all there has been several seasons of shows like jersey shore and the people on those shows are a bunch of stupid meat heads
very upset thought show was very funny watched on netflix wish there was a season 2
i loved the show…and am verry disappointed to see it go i may never watch TV again.
Great show. I think with all the cable shows and Netflix shows available to watch, it takes a new show longer to grab a loyal audience. Too bad. Lost this show and Veronica Mars.
Was looking forward to the next series of this show. It was one that made us laugh – great writers and actors – can’t believe it got cancelled.
I am so disappointed. I had no idea it had even been cancelled. The decline in viewers is just an indication that not everyone has a sense of humor. This show was hilarious and I think a cable network should pick it up.
It was our favorite show. It was hilarious.
I watched season 1 on netflix and loved it- to bad no season 2, it was soooo funny
Someone should go to USA network to pitch this show. It was great!
I agree-my husband and I loved watching this show-it was good clean fun!
can we start a petition to get this show back on the air?
…do those things even work? 🙂
I really love this show. I just started watching it again on Netflix a second time.
oops! strike that. I just saw the petition and support info button on the article :$
How could people give it low ratings?!?! That is the best and funniest cop show ever!
