To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I am very sorry that the series has been cancelled.
Loved this show………don’t cancel! It was HILARIOUS!!
Love the show let it have a second season, god knows whe do not need a another reality show. Give us a break
My family is comprised of my husband (52) and me (47), plus sons aged 15, 18 and 24. We have enjoyed “The Good Guys” immensely, as have my oldest son’s colleagues, who he notes talk about the show at work. It has been one of our favorite programs, along with NBC’s “Chuck,” to which we would call “Good Guys” similar in genre and probable target market. We are so disappointed that Fox is not giving this show the shot that it deserves for improved market share in a better and more consistent time slot! Please reconsider the cancellation of this… Read more »
Perhaps it WOULD also fare well at USA network.
well, doesn’t that just figure? put on a show that is so funny & has great twists & the acting is perfect– it just has to be put on in a sucky time slot to ensure that the fewest amount of available viewers will watch. that’s fux, ahem, i mean, fox, for ya.
So Sad it was cancelled! We LUV this show..so witty and quirky. So, yes, sorry it was canceled!!!!!
This was my favorite TV show…I am so disappointed that it was cancelled. I am hoping cable picks it up as well! PLEASE!
I have to admit that I didn’t care for “The Good Guys” at first. Fortunately, I watch on
Hulu where I let the episodes gather…but once I started watching, the episodes improved and the show grew on me. I still haven’t finished the season yet but I’m enjoying it now. From following this site, I suspected that it would be cancelled so I am not surprised by the decision; I am surprised by how disappointed I am to hear about it.
How disappointing FOX…Dan and Jack would do well on USA NETWORK. This was possibly the best show on TV…
It was a great show–great actors and acting and over-the-top hilarious scripts. I sure hope cable picks it up.
I loved the show ..Please bring it back but move it from Friday nights
Idiots—- the management at fox is so typical of morons looking for a penny today. when there are millions to be had. the good guys-class -a entertainment could have had a cult following. such as STAR TREK,STAR WARS, Billions of dollors wasted because of shortsidedness, and short term greed. fox needs new or better people if it is to survive!!!
It was pretty interesting. Fox did a bad job advertising it and showed it at bad times. No wonder it is gone. That, and the episodes repeated the same themes throughout. It wasn’t the best, but now there’s nothing to watch then.
Love the show very much deserving of a home somewhere
I should know better than to watch anything on Fox because if you get attached to it, it’s going to get canceled. Good Guys was hilarious with great characters and it would be great if it were to be picked up by cable. It could join Memphis Beat or Justified or Men of a Certain Age or join any of the USA shows and be a success! Good job, Fox, you don’t know when you’ve got a good thing. How typical!
