Third time’s a charm — though not for Greg Behrendt. In the third syndication cancellation in as many weeks, the Tribune group has cancelled freshman The Greg Behrendt Show.
The “self-help” talk show debuted in syndication on September 12, 2006 and was hosted by stand-up comedian and best-selling author Greg Behrendt. Each episode featured Behrendt attempting to change their lives in some way — from cheating boyfriends to lifestyle makeovers. (You can hear one guest’s experience via The Hollywood Podcast.)
The Sony Pictures Television-produced show was cancelled, like most, due to low viewership. In its four months, the “self-help” talk show attracted an average of only 880,000 households (0.8 rating) in daytime. It was tied with the similarly challenged The Megan Mullally Show that will go off the air at the end of this month.
The Behrendt cancellation may also be due to soft sales at the recent syndication show in Vegas as well as Tribune’s desire to sign up for the new The Steve Wilkos Show from NBC Universal. The Wilkos show will offer a different brand of “help” — more along the lines of the Jerry Springer variety. Wilkos was actually a security guard and sometimes replacement for Springer on The Jerry Springer Show for ten years.
The staff of The Greg Behrendt Show was reportedly told of the decision yesterday and production is expected to continue for the immediate future. A mix of original and rerun episodes will likely air until at least May.
I too am a Greg Behrendt fan and I was sad but not surprised to see it end. Why? Because at the beginning of his show he started off very much like his books–about relationships and breakups. Then he started adding different things to his show that I had absolutely no interest in–makeovers, parent-kid relationships, all kinds of things that really deviated from his original show and his books. I liked seeing other people’s relationship questions and particularly those that answered whether these couples should stay together and whether or not they should break up. The very first show is… Read more »
i am so sad and disappointed to hear that the show has been cancelled. i think that greg is a breath of fresh air in the talk show arena. the last thing this world needs is another jerry springer type show. what a bunch of garbage!!!!! i really hope that they will reconsider and keep the show on the air. i really look forward to watching it every day..
I am really sad. I know some of you have your negative opinions but Greg talked about real problems that many ppl have and I am going to miss the show, and my daily dose of Greg’s adorableness!
i am sorry to see the show cancelled. i really like the way you asked all the right questions, and how you handled the subject matter (with grace and sophistication). with your talents, greg, you WILL go on to bigger and better things!
best of luck to you from central new jersey!
How is this stupid show different from any other? I still fail to see how someone who points out the obvious, relationship advice,is considered a “guru”. “Greg,my boyfriend cheats on me,what should I do?” “Hey,excellent women derserve excellent relationships.” Duh! If you need someone to answer that question, you deserve to be cheated on.I don’t know what’s more pathetic, these so-called “experts” or the people who seek their advice.
heh heh ha heh heh heh ha, you said up
It is so annoying, when you get someone who is real, uses common sense to help start the ball rolling towards healthy ideas and actions, the money men just cut him off. There is too many channels and not enough time in the day to watch as much tv as the money people want. I don’t think they realize people have to work.
I will miss Greg.
It’s a shame that Greg Behrendt’s TV show was cancelled. I really enjoyed it. He’s a cool guy with really helpful advice to people.
His heart seems to be in a good place.
The dose of humor he added to the show was terrific.
It’s a real shame that so many terrible daytime TV shows remain on the air and his is cancelled.
Knowing that Greg won’t be on the air anymore and dumb shows like Jerry Springer are still on the air is lousy.
I’ll miss his show a lot.
Hey Jessica (from the pageant show) I saw that episode. I like Greg and his shrink but I think they did you wrong. That husband of yours seemed like a jerk who was trying to use the platform of the television show to point out how “horrible” you and pageants are. I haven’t watched the show since then because I was disappointed about how they treated you. I am happy he’s getting the boot too. He ain’t no Dr Phil!
I am UPSET that this show was cancelled. I am a huge fan of Greg & the work he does. It;s a sad world when a show that helps & inspires people is replaced by antics like Springer. What a shame.
That stinks:( I am not a morning talk show viewer due to my occupation as a nightshift nurse. I have been sleep deprived for months since Th GB show began. After watching the CW news every morning when I get home and get the kids off to school. By 9am I am finally ready to relax and I enjoyed watching the show with my coffee in hand more than my much needed sleep. I liked it because he seems like a real person with normal expectations of people and understanding of family and life situations. I am tired of seeing… Read more »
I was a guest on the show that aired yesterday about pageants. I’m glad the show has been cancelled. The producers totally decieved me about what I was on the show for. And the wannabe shrink that they have on the show has no idea what she’s talking about. She’s a made-for-tv doctor and she should definelety not be giving advice to anyone, especially not in front of the show’s couple hundred nationwide viewers. Greg was kinda funny, but canceling his show is even funnier. Ha Ha!!!!!!!!
I’m sorry to see it end. I really enjoyed the show, EXCEPT that they had a bias against overweight guests. I guess i’ll just have to wait for more books.
I think this guy and his producers are lying scumbags. They offered healing and gave nothing. I hope he is done in television forever.
Now I can dish the dirt about my experience.
Great site!!!!!
