CBS recently unveiled their newest Thursday night sitcom — The McCarthys. How is doing? Is it a comedy hit or a flop? Will it last or could it be cancelled soon?
The McCarthys revolves around sports-crazed Irish-American family from Boston. Athletically-challenged and gay son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) plans to finally move away to start his own life. Those plans are thrown into turmoil when his basketball coach dad (Jack McGee) offers him a job as assistant coach — much to the dismay of Ronny’s siblings. The sitcom also stars Laurie Metcalf, Jimmy Dunn, Joey McIntyre, and Kelen Coleman.
The series debuted on October 30th to a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.08 million viewers. Last week’s dropped to a 1.5 in the demo and 6.67 million.
While those might be acceptable numbers for a sitcom on NBC, they are disappointing for one on CBS — particularly on Thursday nights. The show’s poor ratings are also likely hurting Elementary which airs at 10pm.
After two episodes, The McCarthys is averaging a 1.6 rating with 7.38 million viewers. For comparisons, The Crazy Ones was cancelled last season after averaging a 2.1 rating with 8.32 million.
Unless the ratings pick up fast, it’s certain that The McCarthys will be cancelled after a short season of 13 episodes. Today, the network ordered two additional scripts, a sign they aren’t giving up on the series yet.
If the ratings keep dropping, it seems likely that the network will pull the series and replace it with reruns for the immediate future — and eventually replace it with Mike & Molly or another sitcom.
What do you think? Do you like The McCarthys? Do you think it should be cancelled soon or given more time?
Keep the McCarthy’s ! Great cast and funny, funny!
Please give this show the chance it deserves! The characters are easy to love. The acting is wonderful, and it is “laugh out loud” funny! Cancelling this would be a shame.

One of the least funny sit coms i have ever seen. Hopefully it will be cancelled. As it is ruining CBS’s line up.

The McCarthys are really cute the mom steals the show I myself am Irish Catholic and while all Irish families are not like this many are. The show is hitting on numerous issues –Gay, dysfunctional, and those who just cant tell their family members how they really feel. KEEP THE McCARTHYS!!!!

I have too many Shows have already invested in. None have been cancelled, so I find myself dvr ing McCarthys and elementary to watch when they go to reruns near Christmas. The late season launch didn’t help CBs Thursday night. It used to be my favorite night. No longer. Abc is so much better. That said, I started McCarthys and found the first five minutes tedious. I am not certain I will like it. I wanted to like it, since I loved watching John Ritter do sitcoms. Sometimes now I stack them up and wait t if it will be… Read more »
I agree there’s no point in investing time in watching new TV series. I tape those that interest me and most of the time they get canceled, so I delete them. I don’t understand why they’re are so many new shows all the time?? They don’t ever play out a season anymore. I’m finding new TV series frustrating because they all drop like flies. ?.I can’t stand the constant turnarounds!
