Tonight, The New Normal finishes its season on NBC with the marriage of Bryan and David, as well as the birth of their son via surrogate Goldie. Will the sitcom be cancelled or will it be back for a second season so viewers can see how this family continues to develop?
The New Normal, as you’ve probably heard, revolves around a pair of gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who want to start a family. They hire a surrogate (Georgia King) who helps them fulfill their dream, while they help her realize her own. The sitcom also stars Ellen Barkin, NeNe Leakes, Bebe Wood, and Jayson Blair.
With strong lead-in support from The Voice, The New Normal debuted on September 10th to a 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.88 million. The pilot had already been released online so that may have tempered television viewership for the debut.
The following night, NBC aired the second episode and the ratings held steady. Considering the state of the rest of NBC’s sitcoms, a 2.5 demo rating was very good.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last. The sitcom’s ratings declined over the next several weeks. And, once The Voice completed its fall season, New Normal’s numbers really collapsed. Two weeks ago, the series reached a new low — registering a meager 0.7 in the demo and just 2.11 million viewers.
Last week, thanks to the return of The Voice, New Normal’s ratings bounced up 86% to a 1.3 in the demo with 3.32 million. Though the percentage gain is impressive, the show’s ratings are still terrible — even by NBC standards.
Though NBC has few bright spots on its schedule, its clear that the peacock network has no ratings incentive to renew The New Normal for a second season. Thankfully, the cast and crew seem to have given the sitcom’s storylines some sense of closure in tonight’s finale.
What do you think? Would you like to see The New Normal return for a second season or should NBC cancel it to make way for something new?
If the terrible “Whitney” can get a second season, “The New Normal” most certainly should get a second season.
Please do not cancel it NBC! I love The New Normal. RENEW!
I just barely found the show, and I love that Nene Leakes was really good!!!!
I think The New Normal should get renewed for a second season. It is one of the best new shows on television. The New Normal should be aloud to grow and evolve and to find its own audience. The writing is great and has more laugh out loud moments than most of the other comedies on TV today. I want to see how this family grows and I cannot wait to see what they come up with for next season.
I want them to renew The New Normal and give it a better day to show it . I love it it’s different and it’s what going on in this world all it needs is better advertising. NBC renews the reality shows that ppl are not interested in. The same with 1600penn another hilarious show!! Think about it !!
This show is awesome!!! Please don’t cancel it!!!!
First, NBC needs new management and quit cancelling shows without giving them a chance to shine. “The New Normal” is an awesome show!!! The same ole reality shows, dating shows, etc are played out. “The New Normal” needs to stay on the air. If it doesn’t, it REALLY shows what kind of people NBC has working for it.
Let this show Run for a couple more seasons. I have to say we really fine it funny and refreshing. On the plus side its not some crazy reality show.
Let the show find its audience .
I like this show hope it will come back, but I don’t count because I am to old for networks to care what I am watching.
I think it’s a great show with a refreshing spin on the whole family sitcom thing. It should be given the chance to find it’s audience.
I would like to see The New Normal for season two.
Love this show! Do not cancel!
I think the show should stay on. The New Normal is absolutely the best new show on tv. It needs to stay on the air. NBC doesn’t have anything else to offer, hell, they cancelled their whole Thursday night programming and the ‘Office’ and ’30 Rock, even though they weren’t so great at the end. I love the show, love it, love it! Keep it on the air!
renew the show…..
