It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
As an actual abuse victim, I found the show extraordinarily offensive. Comparing slapping a child to real abuse is so disturbing and upsetting, I don’t even know where to start with how offensive and messed up the idea is
I don’t think this show had intended to create a comparation between a child being slap one time and abusive behavior pattern. You are…. You’re think too much. This show isn’t ofensive; instead, it raises many aspects for reflective thinking that we all need to do.
I loved the show! Never missed an episode. I have to assume that the reason it didn’t do well is because many in today’s society can’t watch a show that isn’t filled with excessive violence and gratuitous sex. It’s sad, really. I’d love to see Peter Saarsgaard in more stuff. He’s a very talented actor. Well done, Peter and the rest of the cast!!
YES! That is what I am talking about!
Rosie and Connie seemed out of touch w/reality. there were quality actors, however, the writing was OK could have been better. Rosie and Connie never seemed to getthe damage done by them. They were self obsorbed dangerous and scary to the audience. The child shouldn’t been hit by the man. Neither parents did nothing to control their child and that happens frequently with many parents, in society today.
Loved the Slap!Watched all episodes and would love to keep following the characters!Bought it on amazon and will watch it again!Poor placement was responsible for the ratings! It deserved much better!
I like other’s am disappointed Slap has been canceled. Would of liked to see how the couples relationships grow and change. I would assume the writers would not have the Slapper change. He is evil and should stay that way., but now we will never know.
I loved the series. It had everything a great series is made of. It definitely touched on many of our problems in society. I felt the finale was pre-mature. It was great but I wish they hadn’t jumped ahead and tried to fill so much into a mini series. This could have been a great show. Sorry the ratings weren’t there.
In fact I turned it off when Ritchie went to he pharmacy. Ridiculous. Could have taken a a better route. All season it was AWESOME. Just the last episode…ended wrong. Bring it back. Make it right.
I really liked the premise but I ended up wanting to slap all of the characters especially Hugo’s parents. Half of the characters were self rightous and the others were irritating.
I didn’t see how the show could have lasted another season. How long could they have drawn the issue out without someone being murdered?
I really like this show. I look forward to seeing the writers redeem themselves. The last episode ‘Ritchie’ … I don’t think … Really depicted current reality. Kids these days wouldn’t isolate him, they would gather round and defend Ritchie. So, like it except for the portrayal of classmates of Ritchie. Boo
I loved the show! The Slap had a very intricately designed plot !
Hope USA or another channel picks it up!
This show was much better than I expected. It was artistic, haunting, real, and deep. I think that the name was part of the problem. Also, I was not expecting the episodic emphasis on each character. I think the show could have been marketed better. I watched the first episode only because my husband watched it. I then could not see where it was going so at first I did not watch the next one. It was only after my sister and husband explained how the series was developing that I then resumed watching it. Once I did, I could… Read more »
I loved the show. I am very sad to hear it will not continue. The acting was superb!
We liked the show. Watched it every week. Certainly would have watched a second season. I’m rather disappointed it’s not going to be continued.
This was a top-notch tv program. I’m not sure if the actual name if the show had something to do with the ratings…excellent acting, good writing interesting characters both like able and loathsome. Too bad it won’t see a second season. I think the promotion for it was lacking and the show demographics might have faired better in a different time slot. I enjoyed it.
I don’t know what other shows some people were watching but I thought it was greatpoked forward to every episode.
