It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
This show was actually pretty good. It seems as though people won’t watch anything that’s original anymore. Sad,really.
I don’t think “The Slap” would have been a returnable series anyway, low ratings or not. It would have been extremely difficult to come up with ideas for a second season. They would likely have had to change the name of the series or give it an entirely different premise.
Omg, this was one of the best shows on nbc! The Slap has depth, details, modern social critic, and romance…..etc. please bring it back…. I am sick of other junks on tv.
Oh and one more thing… Show should have ended after courtroom decision..last five minutes were not necessary
I loved the show.. I think it was artistic, and the narration format was refreshingly different from the current shows..loved that it portrayed real people with no fluff..the show was down to earth..the actors were superb.. I am hoping that the show comes back next year with the same actors with different roles and different storyline..
So sad. Finally a good show and it’s getting cancelled. So stupid……the 10:00 time slot killed it. Best show on tv…couldn’t wait week to week fto see what was going to happen next. So it’s back to the brainless reality shows. I am so depressed…..bring it back and put it on at 9:00….it will make a come back!
I loved the series ano I’m sorry to read it’s been canceled. I thought the story line was good together with interesting characters.
Loved this miniseries, “The Slap.” At first I thought the premise was weak, but then I started watching it. Great acting. Great actors. Great story. Loved how each week was entitled as being about one person. Too bad it’s been cancelled.
I like the slap. I would have watched season 2
Really liked the show. Thanks to DVR was able to follow the story line. Didn’t know how NBC would do another season without spinning the story. Loved the actor; sorry to see it end so abruptly.
I love the show …drama!!!
great show – so much better than shows like “The Walking Dead” and stupid shows like that!!
I enjoyed the series…I figured it wouldn’t continue on…especially because they titled it “The Slap”…
I loved this show. Loved all the actors. Loved Uma’s clothes alot. I figured there would not be a second season as they covered all asects in this series. Something totally different from most of the stuff that is on now.
Loved this show- great characters, great story, interesting format. Hopefully it will resonate with more people when it ends up on Netflix.
