There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Figures. My wife and I really enjoyed this show, we had not heard it was cancelled.
CBS you have very little to offer as it is. Makes channel surfing easier though, I will be knocking you our of my faves.
I am a Vet and this is one of the few shows worth watching that is close to real life.
This was the best thing on TV, second to none. Now my wife and I are left watching Saving Grace together. We watched this live sometimes, which meant we had to wait through the ads. Oh well, CBS loses more viewers . . . .
This is so sad! NO season five for The Unit! This is a show that my 10 year old grandson, my sons 22 and 29, myself and my husband faithfully watched every week. This was a unique wholesome show that all the generations of my family could enjoy. What a shame!!! The Unit was an itelligent, patriotic and family centered….no wonder you cancelled it.
I loved the unit, I am a verteran and a military spouse this show helped my family get through things. I agree if they left it on Thursdays and not moved it to Sundays I am sure the numbers would have stated high. I don’t think CBS really cares if they loose viewers or not, they just want to stay mainstream and put on more reality tv (which sucks). Please bring back the unit and move the time slot I am sure the ratings will be well worth it.
I just stumbled across this post about The Unit being cancelled. My husband & I absolutely LOVED this show!!!! We lived to watch every episode!! Someone commented earlier that they thought that CBS wanted The Unit to fail because it was too much like real life. I have to say that I agree!! I think CBS cancelled the show on purpose & I don’t think it had anything to do with the ratings. This show was one of the most popular shows on TV. Why not cancel some of the horrible shows like two & a half men or big… Read more »
What a shame. The Unit is a show that we as a family enjoyed watching togehter. Nowadays, that’s very hard to come by. CBS needs to hear from those that want to se at the very least a series finale.
I live and breath for this show take some of the reality shows and CSI off please leave this one it’s full of action!
Unbelievable. Last night my k ids asked when it was starting up again!! My whole family loved this show and watched it religiously. Wherever CBS gets its info on viewers, they should really consider looking elsewhere…There’s a poll on this page asking if the show should have been cancelled and 99% said NO. AMazing. The same would occur if a poll was taken for Guiding Light. I’m 43 and have watched that show since I was 6. To CBS…I agree I’ll have to move over to NBC and ABC. MY 2 favorite shows gone in a sweep. The decision makers… Read more »
Are you kidding me???? I guess CBs needs room for MORE reality shows. (shoot me now please). I agree with everyone above The Unit was great. But it was hard to DVR cause you never knew what time it was gonna be on. I dont know maybe if they kept it on Tuesday at 10pm it would have done better. But please CBS we need more shows that suck and are rip offs of other shows (hmmm The Mentalist) cough… RIP OFF!!! not to mention CSI : Miami has the worst acting i have ever seen, but please keep the… Read more »
CBS, what the heck are you thinking? Need to make room for CSI, Paris Kentucky? Why not disappoint Big Brother’s 7 viewers. Everyone in my office watched this show, I dont know who your marketing company is but they arent very good. Maybe NBC will pick these guys up. Well no more fighting with my wife over Then Unit or Army Wives at 10 o’clock at least.
The best show on television; unbelievable that you’re cancelling…
The Unit was the best thing that ever happened to CBS! Too Bad!!!
Bad idea CBS! Just for that NBC is the channel to watch now!
I think they need to come up with a better way to figure out who’s watching what. Perhaps a website where people can click on their favorites and specify how/when they watch the show. I record everything & watch it at my convenience. I think lots of people do that & we aren’t getting counted. The Unit was one of my top favorites. I’m so disappointed. Quality TV shows seem to be a dying breed. If they’re good, they don’t last long. That’s a pretty sad fact.
This is the only show I could relate to, 3 tours as a scout. I don’t even watch television,
except The Unit. I hope the financial saving’s worth the loss of loyal patrons of the show.
