ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

That’s wonderful. Finally a new show that is intelligent and has a nice ensemble of actors. The run it against American Idol for 6 weeks and then dump it. Why not just run Fat Farm Redux? And they wonder why people aren’t watching.
Why do they ALWAYS cancel the good shows. I mean for goodness sakes doesn’t ABC know what shows are good and what show aren’t. They don’t give a damn about what the people like or care about. They should really start listening to the people. It’s no wonder they’re the THIRD watched network. They are such losers. I mean what was wrong with The Unusuals, Samantha Who? and Cupid. ABC must stand for A Bunch of Crackpots!
DAMN!!! DAMN YOU ABC!!! DAMN YOU!!!
How is this possible? This is such a smart show. I hate how these networks take off good shows like this and The Unit and then insert some stupid reality show. Just because it saves you money doesn’t mean that we’ll watch it. This is so frustrating.
I really liked The Unusuals. I thought it was very funny, but had its serious moments. I really enjoyed the quirky characters and the mix of real vs. funny cases that crop up. I’m going to miss this show. too bad… I thought I had a nice bundle going there, Lost and then the Unusuals.
No, I loved this show! It’s such a shame all the good shows get cancelled when the stupid shows can continue their run!!! I’m going to miss this show so bad! Shame on you, ABC!
Where do I begin? Why networks give a show only a few months to get high ratings is beyond me! This show was so good, I didn’t even tivo it. I had to watch it instantly! Shame on you ABC!!!!!
That’s ********! This is a great show! I want it to have a second season. We should all just write angry letters to ABC and hope they keep it.
this show debuted jsut when i was looking for something new to watch midseason, it was great, loved the characters; not too complicated, but quirky and fun; just a fun show to watch. loved the concept. barely got promoted, for a midseason show how was it supposed to survive? sadly i knew it was doomed as soon as they put two new episodes back to back on one week and confused everybody. argh.
One more reason to avoid broadcast TV. I really do need to just commit to watching stuff on DVD and ditch my $50+/month cable…
Write in save this show , just like life on mars great show not given a chance, save this show
finally a decent funny cop show and they dont even give it a chance maybe if the moved it around a little like all garbage reality shows it might have found an audiance to bad love the show
Gee take a great show, move it around to several time slots so that it can’t get a constant following and then wonder why it doesn’t do well? The Unusuals was a great show which deserved more of a chance. It’s yet another example of a well-done and intelligent show getting the ax — and the dumbing down of American TV. What stupid reality show are they going to air in its place?
This decision is a shame!!! I love this show. Amber tamblyn’s talent is undeniably the strongest of her generation. She is real and raw and ,as a result, completely engaging and moving. I agree with an earlier post that a show with a cast led by a person of such caliber deserves another try! The writing is fantastic too! This show had the real potential to provide a unique television experience. This is a loss to all television viewers.
Too bad, again another witty watchable show cancelled. I guess networks have to play to the majority and dumb it down. First they boot “Life on Mars”, one of the best series on TV, then pull the plug on “The Unusuals.”
What a dumb idea!! Give us more stupid reality shows, they are cheap to produce, don’t require any brains to produce or watch. When are you people going to play to the smarter people? So disappointing.
