ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

So disappointed that the show is cancelled. It was well written and I loved the cast. Why do they cancel good shows like this and keep on the garbage? ABC what is your problem?Guess I’ll read instead.
OMG! What was wrong? Too intelligent, funny and entertaining?
“The Unusuals” was the best tv show I’ve seen in a very long time. Loved the show and all the characters from the very first show. Can’t believe it was cancelled. Is there any chance of a revival?
Really too bad!! Finally an intelligent comedy and they have to cancel it! This should have been tested in the Fall! It probably would have took off!!! ugh!
I’m completely in disbelief that they could cancel such a well written show! I’ve always steered toward the cop shows and this one seemed especially promising with a great cast and quirky characters. Wouldn’t you know that this easily became one of the two shows that I faithfully watched (the other being In Plain Sight) and now I feel left hanging in the wind with no answers.
It never fails! When I find a show that I love and get totally “into” the characters, they cancel it! I wish they would give it a second chance, but maybe in a different time slot? But who am I? I loved Amber Tamblyn in Joan of Arcadia (another favorite show) and they cancelled that too. I’m frustrated. But then idiotic shows like Family Man and the Simpsons keep running for decades. WHY?
I was very hurt to hear they cancelled this show. It was funny and entertaining. The characters worked so well together. The writers did a great job with mixing the right amount of humor and the right amount of seriousness needed to keep you tuned in for more. Many of us caught wind of this show late. I went online to catch up on episodes. The public would have caught on too if given more of a chance.
Finally a show that was different and entertaining. Wouldn’t you know they would cancel it before it had a chance. The only show that didn’t put us to sleep.
only show i actually enjoyed watching this season
Darn – I really enjoyed watching this online. Good characters – a little quirky.
That’s rubbish that it was not given a chance.
there were only a couple of shows i liked on ABC anyways,..and the Unusuals was one of them,..guess i will be switching channels,..good thing i got cable,..350 channels to choose from. 🙂
Along with Eli Stone, this is a huge mistake on ABC’s part. The show was ‘Unusual’..damn it was only on for a few episodes. I don’t understand this fast changing of shows. They keep coming up with new mid-season shows, and when they hit a good one, they cancel it. I guess they are trying to compete with the cable channels and such shows as Leverage, The Beast, Burn Notice, and several others. Not all my favorites, but it seems like the other networks, meaning other than the big 3, give their shows more time to mature before deciding to… Read more »
i cannot beleive they r canceling and amazing show abc has got 2 be crazy i it makes me not want 2 watch anything they put on new because it will be canceled just when it is getting so good the characters are great , the comedy is so good also ,if u were going 2 cancel a show u should have canceled ,cupid thats got to be the worst show on this yr. i hope fos will pick this fantastic shoe up
Apparently, there’s a limit to how many shows with quality writing and three-dimensional characters are allowed to air on network tv, while the proliferation of reality shows continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It’s a good thing that some of the shows we now consider classic weren’t produced now because they too wouldn’t be given a chance to live.
This was a terrific show, I can’t believe its being cancelled and you hold on to these idiot Bachelor shows, you just doomed me for ABC, I hop FOX will pick it up!
