After big drops in the ratings, it looked like So You Think You Can Dance might be cancelled last year. FOX renewed the program but the focus has shifted to young dancers — So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Will this change bring in a bigger audience or will the ratings drop lower? Will it be renewed for a 14th season? Stay tuned.
Hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance is a competition that pits dancers (now ages 8-13) of various backgrounds against one another to become “America’s Favorite Dancer.” They are partnered with “all-star” dancers from past season. Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo return as regular judges. They are joined by 13-year-old judge Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms).
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
9/13 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The 12th season of So You Think You Can Dance averaged a 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the So You Think You Can Dance TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a 14th season? Is the “Next Generation” format working?
At first I was I thought this season would be awful just like season 12 (the stage vs street thing did not work for me) but I was pleasantly surprised. The kids are really talented and a very entertaining to watch. Some of them are just as good if not better than adults dancers, especially Tate and Kida who blow me away every time. I do wish they still swapped out the 3rd or 4th judge each week or at least have good judges such as Mary and Adam instead of Paula and Jason who I can’t stand to listen… Read more »
I personally loved the stage vs street. It was different and yes I would love the old format but we really got to see dancers out of their elements and it created a more interesting show. The tour was also the best from any tour I had seen. I personally HATED season 11 except for ricky. He was clearly the only reason people watched that season. I definitely do NOT like watching the kids on this show. It was nice to relate to adults and watch them grow out of their comfort zones. These kids are super talented its just… Read more »
I was soooo disappointed to see the show turn into all kids this year. I was excited as I am every year to watch. I just couldn’t believe it seems they just threw away the history of the show. It had become so well established with great adult dancers. Watching kids dance is so unappealing. I turned it on this season and watched maybe 15 minutes and had to turn it off. I can’t believe I no longer have such a great show to look forward to. Oh well, I’ll always remember my faves Marco and Melanie. Hopefully they will… Read more »
I so agree that this new children format is not what I want to watch. Melanie and Marco, Melanie’s running leap into the arms of her partner made me tear up. I tuned in for literally 5 minutes and tuned out for the season. HEY FOX… You’ve lost that lovin feeling …
I am a loyal follower and have watched from day one! SYTYCD is a wonderful reality TV show but this new format lost me as a viewer and having Paula on was not a smart move. I like Paula but not in this capacity. Double whammy for the show. I think the show needs to go back to it’s original format. Bring Mary back as a judge, Jason is good and then bring back celebrity judges. This show was on the right track. The dancing was top notch and watching young adult contestants grow and mature each week was captivating.… Read more »
I think Jason is just as bad as Paula. IMO, he’s extremely boring, inarticulate, and doesn’t even seem to be an expert at dance. I think his judging has a place on DWTS, which does not require technical feedback. But on SYTYCD the dancing is highest level (if the contestants are adults, not kids) and thus should have specific and precise feedback. Mary provided that.
There is probably an audience for these kids, and a time slot earlier in the day, might work, but to replace a great show that SYTYCD was, in prime time, with children, was suicidal.
I feel the show is lost. Kids are cute but it has forced me to stop watching. It was better with adults. Too bad, it was a family night show we all watched.
I’m conflicted. Nigel’s big purpose is education, and I really respect that. I share the concerns of others re the kids, but have to admit they’re mind-boggling. However, I’d hate to see Next Generation or Street vs Stage become regular things. Experimenting is good, but the show developed sophistication way beyond ‘reality show’ standards over the years & I wanted to see that develop – the choreography competition Nigel held online was just what I was envisioning, and I so wish that had been on the network. I recall the old PBS Dance In America series & there are so… Read more »
I stumbled on this page because I was curious how the ratings were this season. We were avid viewers every year until this one. Really disappointing. It’s like “Toddlers with Tights”. The smarmy, affected cuteness of stage kids is really off putting. The crying even seems staged. SYTYCD’s strength was discovering dancers who crossed disciplines and genres to excel and amaze. It wasn’t broke…why the need to fix it?

My husband and I have watched SYTYCD for eleven seasons…never missed a week. We even attended three different all star shows. This new format is not appealing and we are not watching. Please return to the old show that we loved!!!!
This show is the most amazing show! I didn’t think I would get used to the changes with the new judges but they have developed a great rapport. The next generation has continued to amaze me. The range of emotions this show evokes is indescribable. If the ratings are dropping it’s because it’s not marketed appropriately. Compared to DWTS there is no comparison. This is real and beautiful verses a gimmick show filled with celebrities wanting 5 more minutes of fame. SYTYCD taps into so many elements. It’s amazing how the choreographers, the dancers, the music, and the costuming showcase… Read more »
I have been a fan of SYTYCD from the beginning and have soldiered through the seasons that were mediocre. This new format is pretty much the exact opposite of what attracted me to the show in the first place. I managed 10 minutes of the first episode. It was nauseating. I assume this will be the last season. I’m sorry that the producers couldn’t come up with a way to keep the original format fresh. My suggestion would have been NOT TO TRY SO HARD. All of the manipulative reality TV techniques were not necessary, and in the longer run… Read more »
My wife and I have watched this show every year, never missed an episode. Watched the first episode of this season and could not watch it any more. Having kids doing sexy routines is just wrong. Bring back the old show and we will watch again.
The ratings on this show dropped 22 percent since last year. This should be no surprise to SYTYCD since when you announced this new format with kids, all the comments were negative. Just shows you that you can’t just shove bad programming down peoples’ throats. Maybe try listening to what people actually want to see. This is not rocket science!
All these bad comments kinda make me cry bcz I love this season and I’m 15 I really wanna audition for sytycd next season and all these bad comments and ratings are making hard for me to do that I want to show the world my talent and this is hard for me to read these like really ppl don’t understand how hard it is for kids to become famous dancers bcz ppl don’t want that but I want kids to dance and show ppl how much they love it I don’t want it to be canceled or back to… Read more »
If they were to get renewed and go back to the old format ( that’s a hail Mary ), you wouldn’t be able to audition. Have to be 18.
Go out and audition! If this is your passion chase it and get on that show. There will always be polarizing opinions on change and usually the people who dislike it scream way louder then those in favor of the change. As someone who loved seeing talented kids given the chance to show the world their hard work, I say go for it. There will be people who boo, but there will also be plenty who cheer for you. Let the cheers win out.
Why? This used to be our favorite show. When they started changing things around, we questioned it, but went with it. Then they got rid of Mary Murphy and the wonderful other judges that frequented the panel (Adam Shankman). We still tolerated it. 15 minutes into this new show & we already knew it wasn’t for us. It’s kind of interesting to see budding new dancers. But, not on this show. We don’t want to see children cry, We don’t want to see children get injured. And, we CERTAINLY don’t want to see children dancing provocatively. I have a feeling… Read more »
Your kinda right about the seeing kids cry and stuff like that but I think kids should also have the chance to show the world there beautiful talent dancing is life and when you dance everything feels better in life and kids should have tried chance to express that in there dancing kids can do what adults can do and if they get kicked off the show they learn to keep going and they also have grown in there dancing I don’t want then to go back to there old format I think kids should keep dancing and your gonna… Read more »
I thought last seasons dance vs stage was a dumb idea. It’s hard to believe the producers sat around brain storming some ideas and came up with this horrible idea. I used to like the show but this season is unwatchable.
I’ve been watching SYTYCD since I was in grade school, and always looked forward to the summers, where I would be inspired by the amazing, creative, and touching performances. However, after watching the premiere of this season, I had to stop watching what used to be my favorite show, and such an inspiration for me as a dancer and person in general. The show has become so much more shallow and based on “cuteness”. The idea to have kids perform was the worst they could have come up with, and it has entirely changed the shows. I feel like I’m… Read more »
