After big drops in the ratings, it looked like So You Think You Can Dance might be cancelled last year. FOX renewed the program but the focus has shifted to young dancers — So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Will this change bring in a bigger audience or will the ratings drop lower? Will it be renewed for a 14th season? Stay tuned.
Hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance is a competition that pits dancers (now ages 8-13) of various backgrounds against one another to become “America’s Favorite Dancer.” They are partnered with “all-star” dancers from past season. Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo return as regular judges. They are joined by 13-year-old judge Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms).
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
9/13 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The 12th season of So You Think You Can Dance averaged a 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the So You Think You Can Dance TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a 14th season? Is the “Next Generation” format working?
Won’t be watching it again. Only 3 of the top 5 deserved to be there as these shows turn in to a popularity contest, not a talent contest. Judging should’ve been left to the judges, not people following a fad. Very disappointed.
The winner is called “America’s Favorite Dancer” not “America’s Most-Talented Dancer” — generally everyone can agree that the top 20 or top 10 for each season represents *some* of the best dancers in the world, but after that the results depend largely on the preferences of those who are actually compelled to vote for one artist or the other. Some people may vote based purely on technical proficiency, others may vote based purely on entertainment value, some may vote based on their instinct and still others may have completely different criteria. To hold the show accountable for the results of… Read more »
You are correct
But personal preference is hard to argue, when someone says someone other than your pick deserved a spot more
While I did enjoy Next Generation, it turned in to a popularity contest rather than a talent contest. Only 3 of the final 5 should’ve been there, and the wrong one won anyway – popularity. Will not watch it again.
The point of the show is Americas favourite dancer so obviously it’s about popularity dumbass
Stopped watching as soon as “Next Generation” started. Most people I know are over twenty, if I want a hyped up school recital then maybe we’d watch.
Really missed this show this year. Watched a couple of times, but it was just unwatchable
Please please go back to the original format. No more kids, no more stage vs. street. Then, I will definitely watch again. I miss the show desperately. Had watched from the very beginning. Couldn’t wait every year for the show to starts
I prefer the original format. I agree that kids become fans and they vote that way. Did not watch it except the first show. What happened to Mary.
Renew, but not in this format. I like the old format with the allstars and contestants. Maddie is pretty useless.
This is a dance show. If the kids are as good as adults, why is it not good? I enjoy the show as well as any of the previous years’.
I don’t know why people hates this show. I think this show is fantastic. I never knew that the kids can be dancing so good. I enjoy the show immensely
I thought jason and Paula really brought the level of the show down and then they added maddie. I miss learning something by watching this show. I tried to watch another show to watch bad technique even I could spot overlooked for cuteness. This show has become nothing but a weekly popularity show with a ton of fluff between recycled dance moves. Time to clear the dvr.
My daughter is a dancer and we used to luv this show. No longer it is terrible. The kid who is a judge is irritating beyond belief. What a sad way to end such a good family program.
Please stop this Next Gen thing. It is everything this show should NOT be. If I wanted to see kids dancing I would go to their recitals. By all means fund children’s dance programs as many deserving, talented kids cannot afford lessons. But I want to see adult dancers who can handle different genres, choreography, costumes, and themes. What I get now are the same steps repeated during the dance and from week to week ad nauseum and rah-rah judge comments. The music is abysmal and I guess the show can’t handle higher royalties. I have never fast forwarded through… Read more »
From Ricky Ubeda and the magnificent top twenty of season 11 to this leaves me angry and disgusted. Great to encourage talented children but what’s next SYTYCD – Dance Moms Edition?
I am so sad about this season. Everything seems strained..the judges somewhat false, and all hoping to boost ratings. It feels that way. I think last season’s ratings were lower because a lot of street routines did not televise well. The flashing lights seemed to overwhelm the dancers. When I saw the show live, I loved their routines the most. It was the best production ever! But I can’t handle this season at all. I pray that it will go back to its original format because it was one of the best shows, with amazing talent in dancers and choreographers.
I PAID for this on Hulu. Ugh. I want my money back; so disappointed in this new format.
DW & I had watched the show since its inception however no more. This was such a bad idea I cannot imagine it stands any chance of being renewed. A terrible decision by someone amounts to a really great show going down in flames.
This is the only year I haven’t watched, ive loved this show from day one but it lost its appeal with kid dancers, kids are cute and all but dancing is more than that.
