Things aren’t looking good for Time After Time. ABC has announced they’re replacing the low-rated series with episodes of Match Game on Sunday nights.
The drama follows a young H.G. Wells (Freddie Stroma) as he travels to the present in pursuit of of the brilliant and engaging surgeon, Dr. John Stevenson (Josh Bowman) a.k.a. “Jack the Ripper.” The cast also includes Génesis Rodríguez, Nicole Ari Parker, Will Chase, Jordan Sparks, and Jennifer Ferrin.
Time After Time premiered on March 5th to very low ratings. The show’s debut received a 0.65 rating in the 18-49 demo and only 2.54 million viewers. The series’ numbers have only declined from there. Only five episodes in, the drama is averaging a 0.54 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.20 million viewers, making it one of the network’s lowest-rated series for the 2016-2017 season.
While ABC has not officially announced a cancellation (networks rarely do), it seems certain that it’s cancelled, given the terrible ratings and the show being pulled from the schedule. Match Game will air in place of Time After Time beginning April 2nd. There are currently no plans to air the remaining installments.
What do you think? Have you seen Time After Time? Do you think it should have been cancelled?
I am interested in seeing the rest of the story. 🙁
I loved this show, was starting to develop. Sorry to see it go. Maybe SciFi will pick up the unaired episodes
I would watch it if it aired on any other channel. Even Netflix! It was a great show that they never gave a chance to.
I can’t believe the show is axed in the middle if the season! I loved the actors in it and really enjoyed the storyline as well. Too bad it was aired on Sunday. It might have had different outcome had it been aired during the week. I hope Hulu or Netflix will pick up the show. I want to see the rest of the season!!
We should have been able to see all the series and perhaps it needs to be on at a better time slot.
This show was a hot mess. I am not at all surprised it was canceled. They got so much history wrong… and not obscure stuff. They got a lot of basics out and out wrong: 1) Watching online World War I footage with sounds of explosions – World War I ended in 1918, Sound was not introduced to films until 1927. There should not/would not have been ANY sound in any footage from WWI. And when they went back to 1980: 1) Jane tells Wells that Reagen is president – Reagan was still running for President until November 1980. Carter… Read more »
You’re absolutely right about the historical inaccuracies. Being a big Madonna fanatic I recall when Jane told H.G. to talk about her at a 1980 event exactly when she said it & thought-mistake! To be 100% accurate M released her 1st eponymous album in ’82 w/worldwide hits like “Holiday”, “Borderline”,”Lucky Star” & her 1st single “Everybody”. Certainly in 1983 many would know M from those hits, that album. However ’84’s album- single “Like a Virgin” & tour is when she first became a household name & 35 years later she still is. That is incredibly rare & impressive!!❤️. “Time after… Read more »
I like the comments and historical corrections that you mentioned. So much that I decided to comment for the first time on this site. I was turned off from the previews of “Jack the Ripper” operating a cell phone if I was transported to lets say 100 years in the future I am certain I couldn’t get so familiar with the new technology so quickly. Also I got interested in the show on NBC called “Timeline” I lean more toward show in which they go to the past rather than the past coming to the future (except that show on FOX ewww…)
I loved it clever and cool. A lot little plot lines
I loved that show. I was wondering what happened. The network really screwed up!
Couldn’t agree more Gerry. Only 5 episodes, barely more than only 1 month for a show to “find an audience” and they just dump it?!? Really it makes no sense from a financial POV & what I believe they owe their customers. There are so many channels & options for entertainment, if you’re going to develop, cast, advertise & so much more a show why wouldn’t you want/need to give it much more than 5wks to see if it can be successful? I can’t be the only that truly doesn’t see any logic in that. Especially for a show debuting… Read more »
I liked the show. I also think they should have at least let us see the rest of the season. What’s the point in not letting your TV viewers seeing the show to it’s end. The actors did the work and it’s already taped right. Besides these times in between our regular show going on down time, these other shows would do great.
Networks are horrible for doing things like this. The only way to “make” them do it is with a massive write in type campaign or Petitions. Networks, in general, are awful for Sci-Fi type shows. They never seem to give them a chance to “find” their audience. If this show was on AMC, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc, they would have been allowed to “find” an audience. If shows like The Walking Dead or Breaking Bad had been on Network TV, they would have been canceled after the first few episodes. Network TV is more “Mindless” TV. Either, dumb sitcoms, Police… Read more »
You can’t judge netflix and the ABC TV network the same. They have much different standards for judging a show’s success of failure. As a matter of fact Netflix is one of Network TV’s main competitors. TV Networks are fighting to keep their dwindling audience. That’s why most major networks have their own apps and streaming websites now because they have to compete with netflix and Hulu. They dont have the luxury to waste millions of dollars waiting for poorly performing shows to find an audience. They have to pay millions of dollars in production cost to air these shows,… Read more »
The point is money. These shows cost millions of dollars to produce. Personally I didnt think I would like the show when I saw the previews. But I streamed it one night when I was bored and I got into it fast. I think Freddy Stroma ( HG) and Josh Bowman ( The Ripper) had tremendous chemistry. But as far as the story went It went around in a circle. I highly doubt they couldve kept it interesting for more than perhaps one more season. The production values were very good and I think everyone of us is fascinated by… Read more »
They might just do that Tyra, air at least some of the already made episodes that haven’t aired. Networks have done it several times b4, especially when it’s Summertime & there’s not a whole lot of original, non repeats on broadcast tv. That’s exactly what I’m hoping also, they’ll at least give us whatever they’ve got “in the bag” to see as filler. Why not, they’ve already payed for it, so it’ll cost them $0 & us fans get a win. Take care…
The problem with this show is that it was up against The Walking Dead. Now that TWD is on break, why not see how it can do without TWD as competition? Seriously, who runs things at ABC? No wonder they are struggling so much.
The show was atrociously written. No amount of good acting could save such horrendous writing. This show might have had a shot going up against reruns of Keeping up With the Kardashians… but I don’t know of too many scenarios where it would have pulled the ratings necessary to save it.
Preach Tom! LOL Btw, I totally agree.
The network should allow the viewers to see the rest of the series. I enjoyed it and I think the advertised upcoming plot twist may, along with some better publicity, might make difference. After all, who didn’t love The Time Machine.
I. Loved Time After Time. It was entertaining and imaginative. It seems all the shows that are good get pulled. I’m sorry ABC felt this show had to go. Id like to see it return.
They took off an interesting and intriguing show to replace it with Match Game? Puhleeeze … There are a few of us out here that have half a brain and would prefer to exercise it! Bring. it. Back.
Well said. A “thinking person’s” series. Watching the descent of intelligent program into simple, no-brain-power required shows is sadly indicative of viewing trends in general.
Exactly. The Twists and Turns we were starting to see really made your mind work. But when you think about it, the Big 3 Networks don’t really have any “thinking” shows on TV. Just mindless comedies, police procedurals that point everything out into a perfect little package (with the exception of Maybe the show “Taken”) and Reality tv that is anything BUT Reality.
The fact that ABC replaced Time after Time with The Match Game shows how out of touch ABC and the other Big 2 networks believe we are just a “mindless” society.
Putting an hour long old game show on Primetime TV is ABC’s version of “Jumping the Shark” as a Network.
Sorry to hear that Time After Time will not be back. We had really enjoyed this show. It seems that all the good shows no longer stand a chance these days.
I wrote a positive comment for Time after Time and it appears to have been pulled off shortly after being posted. I’m disappointed, because this is an exciting and intriguing show.

Time After Time is an interesting show, just beginning to blossom and getting more interesting with each episode. With any new show, it takes time to really become acquainted with the cast of characters. This show does not deserve to be cancelled. Please bring it back!
